Default Bobbins for 201 and other vintage machines

I have a Singer 201-3 and need some more bobbins. Does it take class 66 bobbins? No where in the manual does it actually say what bobbin it takes. Manuals just seem to assume that you are using the bobbins provided with the machine and if you are a second owner, they may not be there. I'd also like to know if there is a chart anywhere that lists what size bobbins go with what machine. I have a bag of class 15 bobbins and I don't know what machines use this size. I'd also like to know whether I should search for vintage bobbins or will the newer reproductions work as well. Can I use plastic bobbins in vintage machines or should I stick to the metal ones? Your help would be appreciated.

Hi - On the Singer website there is a place to find the replacement parts for your machine, including the bobbins. You have to look hard to find it, but it's there. Your 201 machine takes a Class 66 bobbin. Best to stay with metal bobbins in the older machines. The plastic ones don't seem to work well at all. Lots of people here have tried them and they're not good in our older girls. You can get metal reproduction ones that work fine.

Dont' buy them at big box stores... they're JUNK. The holes sometimes are narrow and won't fit on the bobbin winder properly and they are not manufactured well at all. You can buy them from Sew Classic online. Stick with metal ones like jljack said.

The ones I got from 'the big box store' fell apart - the side piece does make ok ear rings with a bit of work...

Shelbie, I've had good luck with these two sources:

1. Cindy Peters at stitchesintime at earthlink dot net - turn it into a legit email. She also sells on Ebay.

2. Sew-Classic.com - http://shop.SEW-CLASSIC.COM/Bobbins_c7.htm = ten for less than three bucks

Hope that helps.

I bought a lot of 35 vintage class 66 metal bobbins for Singers that use those bobbins. I think it was $10 with shipping.
