or accidentally trip a can of paint and got spread all over the machine and he didn't bother to clean it.

There was some studies at some point about the color and eye strain - maybe they thought the green was easier on the eye?

That is what I was thinking, also. When I first started teaching, I had huge, beautiful black REAL slate chalkboards in my room. Came back after one summer break and they had painted them with green chalkboard paint. Couldn't even erase them without water after that!
