I have all three, (301, Featherweight and Kenmore 1040) and I love them all. But when I go to a class I almost always take the little Kenmore. It has a great case that looks like a little attache case. And the fact that is can zigzag is wonderful. I have had my little Kenny since the mid 90's and I have really used it!

Thanks for all the great advice! Who knew there were so many different 3/4-size options! I've decided that I can't add to my collection until I sell one of my Featherweights. Then I think I'm going to add one of the littler Kenmores AND a 301. But don't tell my husband .

I'm confused on what your are calling a Spartan - Joe's photo shows a Sewmore. I just picked up a little 3/4 machine in a cabinet this week and it actually says "Spartan" on it. There was no book or anything, so I'm not sure what model it is. A 99 that takes a 66 bobbin? The bobbin loads from the top & I prefer that. Mine has a really nice finish, but runs kinda rough even after cleaning and oiling. The cabinet is so cheap it wobbles, not even a tilt drawer on it. Model ES196239 and says made in Great Britain on it.

The Spartan was sold as stripped down version of a 99, I think the model was a 192(?) It came without a light or fancy decals. Yes the 99 takes a 66 bobbin, several machines besides a 66 use that bobbin.

I'm a member of two Kenmore groups and know several Kenmore enthusiasts. Those members that own a 1040 can't recommend them highly enough. Seriously, they go on and on about them. These machine have pop-out extensions, both length and width, are zig-zag/utility stitch capable, and are light but very strong. With normal use they last forever. And they look extremely cool.

There is the class 66 bobbins which is for a drop in type machine then there are the touch and sew etc with drop in bobbins on the newer machines. A lot of times a class15 bobbin is used in the machines with a bobbin case whether Singer 15 or others. Others with a bobbin case: the 301 and the FW use it's own type. The 306 etc use an L bobbin - There are long bobbins but that doesn't count in this case. This is not totally right so be sure to look up what you need in your owner's manual. Manuals can be found on line.

KenmoreRulesAll...LOL, I am intrigued about the Kenmore 1040 and will start keeping an eye out for one at garage sales.
The Singer 301 is my favorite sewing machine in our house - the vertical bobbin and slant shank are two really great features that I have come to LOVE! I bought her after asking for advice from our experts here and am so happy I listened!
Ila, as long as you don't mind that it only does a straight stitch, you couldn't go wrong with a 301 - it has a lot of space for piecing too.
