Estate buy
I got a cabinet and machine today at an estate sale. The machine is not orignal to to the cabinet and I would like to know if anyone can give me any info on the cabinet It has two storage areas withlids on the swing out door and the top is unusual because it has a decorative backing on it.
The machine is a Montgomery Wards #7 4823810. The machine is nice and clean. Some dust but overall in good condition.
Photos shown below.

Very, very similar to my MW UR-988A 7 Jewel Automatic. Same color, same basic design, just doesn't use cams like ours. Mine is the twin to the Dressmaker 205 so your's might have a Dressmaker twin as well.
I is a Japanese make. Check for a J-A number under the bed. There is a chart on the Yahoo site ( one of the few things I found there ) that lists most of the numbers and the matching manufacturers.
Love that cabinet!!! Never anything around here as good as that.

The cabinet looks like a Kenmore cabinet. I have not thoroughly researched Kenmore cabinets, however I do know that sometime in the late 40's Sears decided to make their machines and cabinets proprietary. They didn't want a Singer, or any other brand, machine in a Kenmore cabinet, nor did they want a Kenmore in a Singer cabinet. What they did was square off the bed of the machine and move the placement of the hinge pins. If you are ever looking for a cabinet for your machine make sure you notice the bed corners. If they are rounded the machine will not properly fit a squared corner cabinet

Still trying to find info on recent purchase. M/W model 269. I cant find any numbers of the bottom of the bed, but the bed is stamped "HAPPY" and several of the parts also have that stamp.

Happy was the name of the Japanese manufacturer. They made machines for M/W. I believe they also made commercial embroidery machines. They made nice, solid, machines. You can check out the vintage Japanese sewing machine group under yahoo groups. They are a wealth of information and pictures.
