It is finally my turn...
I've been watching Craigslist for a singer cabinet for nearly a year. One to switch out machines in.
Absolutely NONE of the amazing deals you all seem to get, and in fact none without a machine.
Although I'd have been happy with another machine...
I've also been watching for a 301, aluminium, light enough to be a class machine.
Sadly all I found in the end was a 404... YIPEE! Am mad about it!!!
But still no cabinet.
I've also been running in the goodwill in Longview each trip to town, average 3 times a month. I have never seen a machine cabinet yet, of any flavor.
Until today...the stars shown on me
They had FOUR cabinets, 3 with machines (2 Kenmore, but looked good) from 9.99 to 12.99.
But the fourth one?
Singer? check
compact size? check
Two fold outs? WOW, bonus time!
And the machine? A 301.
$34.99...and today was 50% off all furniture.
I'm so tickled. It is still in the car, I can't lift anything for a couple of week so the only picture I could get would be of its underpants side. Does it run? Don't know, Does it have a bobbin case? Don't know don't care.
Please note, I think the higher price was because the machine included...wait for it...THREAD
About 10 spools, with about 3 inches of thread on each.
Just wanted to share the joy!
Anyone in SW washington need a 301? I'm not a collector, my 404 is it+me=happyforever

When you talk the 301 out of the cabinet -you can sell the cradle it's sitting in (don't need it for the 404) for more than you paid for the whole thing LOL!!
Sounds like you got a great score today, even if you don't want to keep the machine.

The second machine that I got is my maternal Grandmother’s Singer 404 portable with snap-on case and folding table. I agree with you, they’re little workhorses! I sewed together a canvas store bag with it to carry a couple of bank bags, the “want list” spiral pad, and a few other odds and ends back and forth to the shop. That was back in 2006, and the canvas bag is still going strong, although the handles are getting worn from hanging it on a coat hook in the back of the shop. The 404 is still going strong, but not used much lately. My wife took it to quilt class a couple of times before we found her a FW.
You may want to take a second look at that 301 for quilting. My wife fell in love with my LBOW Singer 301A and now claims it for her main quilt-piecing and quilting machine at home. She has it mounted in her largest cabinet and does FMQ with it. I have a couple of black 301s (a longbed and a shortbed) stashed up in the attic at the shop, but I haven’t ever gotten them serviced up for use. My wife doesn’t like climbing the ladder/stairway to the attic, so I think they’re safe up there from her or anyone else. There’s a couple of 404 parts machines up there keeping them company amongst other aluminum parts machines. I keep several of my aluminum parts machines up there because they’re not quite as heavy to tote up there as the cast iron ones are. I don’t have a dumbwaiter and have to wrestle them up and down the ladder/stairs by hand.

OMgosh, I think this machine is perfect. I'm going over it now. Ooo a little flap plate!
I'll add photos in a minute.
Thanks for mentioning cradle, I wouldn't have known what I was seeing.
I can't get the cradle off. I know it has to be simple...off to google.
What I thought was greasy oil on the back is just greasy dust.
Oooo
