To add a note to yesterday's post, please post a picture of your 404 so I can add it to my "gotta have it list". A side note here, you can turn sideways and miss my husband's furry eyeball coming at you. But we have slowed down the pace of our lives for the autumn coming up, so we'll have something to look for when we hit the road.

Normally, I am just a lurker on the site, but I could not resist saying something this time. First, congratulation on your gorgeous find at the GW store. I realize that you are not a collector of the smaller machine, but you may want to consider it. Secondly, it's the big sister to the Featherweight, which can be a collector's item. Thirdly, this is a 'Centennial,' model, which means it was produced during Singer's centennial celebration. I just recently purchased one in the Featherweight and paid $400. for the machine. So you may have been joking of the $500. But, that machine can easily value out to 5-8 hundred dollars. Give it away if you may, it may be a nest-egg for you. Thank you for allowing me to summit my input. Enjoy.

Actually, Singer 301A machine number NA300890 was probably produced some time in 1953.

The Singer 301 model was introduced in 1951, but there were only a few produced. The “Grand Introduction” of the 301 didn’t happen until October 1952, and the “A” was added to the model number in 1953.
Research information courtesy of Singer 301 Dot Com at:
http://singer301.com/dating/default.html

Without accurate records available from the Anderson SC Factory (destroyed), the Singer website and current Singer staff can only give 1951 for all Singer 301 and 301A machines. They don’t have any other official information of specific serial number assignment.

i have a Black 301 (no A). Mine is a long bed and came in a case - with the card table.

my Tan 221 was made in 1961 - at least that is what the seller claimed and since that makes it the same age as me - I don't want to find out differently LOL!!

don't be a lurker!! opinions and thoughts are the lifeblood of a forum!

I found a lot of good info on the 301 here
http://www.singer301.com/about/default.html which is worth a read.

My machine isn't marked Centennial, although my featherweight is. I don't care for the featherweight Someday I'll get off my lazy bum and put it up for sale.

My saying the 301A is a 1951 machine is just ego, it is still a 1953 model The Anderson facility didn't produce until 1953.

My saying I'm not a collector of anything is based on working through my house with FlyLady
and having had breast cancer in 2011 and lung cancer in 2013.

I do have a selection of 'users' though..
I was given a treadle by founder of TreadleOn, Richard Wrightman. Love it!
A client gave me a 1927 singer hand crank AND a 1946 White in a cabinet. Love them both!
Got caught up in the featherweight and bought one... don't like it, too little
I have a 15 clone which I got just because I wanted one, I've made two quilts on it and will let it go to the right person.
My 404 I got strictly for classes, my preference being the drop in bobbin. like the 301 it is aluminum frame and only 2 pounds more than the 301. Classes because by mid September we will both be retired and I'll finally get to do some of the things I've not been able to do before.

Oh, and I have a Janome 6600 I bought to use the 3 years I lived away from home caring for my FIL
and a 8900 as a reward when I finally got back home. I've got the machines through the house so I can sit down and sew with what ever view strikes my fancy that day.

Now see, if you hadn't come out of lurkdom we'd not know each other at all would we.
And I'm still most excited about the cabinet

I don't believe that her model has the blue Centennial Seal, but you're correct.....if it did, the value would skyrocket. There were only 10,000 of them made, all of them 301s, not 301As, and who knows if all of them got the blue badge.....

to put the 127 in the singer cabinet, my memory is saying it is a smaller machine too, would I need the 301 cradle for it?

Congratulations on finding your cabinet! MY son found a 403A Friday and bought it for me. It's in absolutely perfect condition -- he says it doesn't look like it's been used very much! I wasn't really looking for a machine -- he cruises through the electrical and appliance sections of GoodWill whenever he has a day off!

I have been looking for a Featherweight (in my area) as a gift for my cousin who lives in Oklahoma! Everything I've found has been far too expensive for a gift, because I know my cousin. She's very frugal. I guess she has to be! And, I'm not wealthy, so anything I purchase as a gift has to be a very good buy! This cousin has done a lot for me -- she machine-quilted (she has a quilt shop) a top I made as a wedding gift for my nephew back in 2010! So I would dearly love to find a FW for her! I'm very happy for your cabinet find! Congrats! Good Health Wishes as well!
