They're shabby now...
Apparently painted by someone who only had bright primary colored plastic toys as a kid. They even painted the brass pulls.

My sister and I went to a bunch of antiquey type stores this past weekend, and that shabby chic stuff was everywhere. At one of the stores, that was all they had. I nearly got physically ill.
