Default My new $11 legs

Here are my new treadle legs. I found them at a garage sale today for $11. It took me all afternoon to retrofit these legs onto the top I already had. In order for my school house treadle top to work with these wider legs, I had to lose one side of drawers, that's why there's only 2 on the side.
The $11 treadle legs came with a super crusty top that had many parts missing, but luckily everything I needed from the old treadle was there to put on my new hybrid one.

I also had to re-install the front drawer which was a pain in the butt, and the drip pan. I wish the old rounded corner drawers that came with the crusty $11 treadle weren't coated with so much laquer or varnish, I tried to strip them, but it wouldn't come off. I'm keeping them, so in the future I might be able to put them on instead of the square drawers I have on there. But the colour of the stain is way off and they would look silly.
I really like the look of the old legs. The school house legs that are all metal are not as nice looking.

Glenn was up here a while ago and we made a hybred or bastard treadle, too.
This is the top of a cabinet that had been sawed up to fit a Touch and Sew - WHY WHY WHY???

Glenn is pointing to a place that kept the new top from fitting. We took the top off an electric type cabinet and put it on the top of the treadle.

wrong picture - this is another one we just put the top of a cabinet on the legs - it took a bit of fussing but we got it to work. We had to remove quite a few parts off the original cabinet.

We eventually got the top off the electric machine's cabinet onto the top of the old treadle cabinet. It was an awful lot of work. It just only needs drawers...

I think what you did on yours is commendable - it is very hard to make something else to work. You spent more than $11 if you count your time. I do see legs out there from time to time but usually more than $11.

The singer bases come in two sizes. I found that out the hard way when I bought a second table that looked just like my first one as I needed parts - drove 2 hours and as soon as I looked at it I realized it was a bit smaller. I'd have to go measure, but it is bit narrower in both directions. The larger one comes with a table that is 36" long and the smaller one comes with a table that is 34" long. At least they are the same height! Older ones are bigger, I'm not sure when they changed but I think it was around the 20's-30's.

Of course, the newer style plain leg is the same size as the smaller cast base.

Another idea Glenn had was to make a top out of plywood and fit it with a hole to set a machine in. We never got around to that. Maybe he will show up on here and explain how to do one like that.

It was a lot of work, and I had to use a mixture of the old crusty treadles parts and mine to make it work. The 2 little angled side pieces of wood that have the drawer hinges are from crusty top, but the hinges and drawer are from mine. There is a big back piece that hides the machine and that came off crusty too. Other than that, it was retro fitting my pieces like the drawer and the oil catcher to fit. The oil catcher was a challenge too, it was crewed to the plain legs before, but thank goodness I was able to make it work with the crusty back piece that wraps around the sides. I had to bend the sides out a bit for that oil catcher to be able to screw into the opening under the drawer. I dont' know if that makes sense, but it all worked in the end. I also did some major oiling and greasing of the treadle parts. They were caked in dirt.
