Cari, you may be right that the second hole is to access something else. According to the manual, that I believe I got at the Vintage Japanese yahoo group, the parts diagram looks like there might even be two set screws for the stitch length knob and one for the reverse knob. I'm thinking that the problem with the knob unable to push in has anything to do with any set screw but further inside the machine.

I have just acquired a badged machine and need to work on it. Ourworkbench, your information is very valuable. Will be referring to this thread as i get into the machine. thanks
