Looks like some sort of sticker to me too. Shouldn't be a big problem to remove.

You are right, there are writing there, why didn't I see that. I thought it was a major crack or ding in the paint. That makes me muc more interested in taking it on :- )

A good soaking with sewing machine oil might even do the trick.

I thought it was a major scrape too, but I can see it possibly as a sticker or tape. If the price was right I would take it either way. You could always try and touch up the paint and use it for now. If a better one comes along in the future then trade up and re-home that one.

It looks like masking tape to me. The Singer 201 is one of my favorite machines, mine is an original hand crank; I prefer to treadle it.
