I bought a White Rotary online for just $10 and $20 shipping. the seller didn't know how to pack one. he didn't strap the machine to the base and he shoved the attachments box and the power cords and foot pedal onto the bed and set the bent wood case onto it. it jostled loose from the base in the shipping and was stuck inside the case. I had to break the end of the case to get the machine out. there was a foam packing peanut in between the base and machine. he also had overexposed photos in the ad and it didn't look as bad in photos as it did in person. it's my project machine. most of the original japanning was worn off and it has a bad case of pin rash. so, here's what I got in the mail. ugh. I bought a beautiful Jones online and had it shipped by someone who knew how to pack a machine and she's a beauty. but here's my White. I am going to get her painted and I have replacement decals to put on, then clear coat her. I named her Patti after my grandma who passed away 2 weeks ago. this White is from 1928 and grammy was born in 1930. she would have liked it. I am so happy to read your comments here. My only non-Singer oldie is called a "Honeymoon". I understand that they were made by the Davis Company, but can't confirm this. I am still looking to learn its age. I gather from various snippets that Davis Co. was maybe sold to ??? , then I find "Honeymoon" seems to be associated with New Home and also, the name Minnesota. I am grateful for any info (resources) that will lead me to know more. Thank you

Does anyone know about the STANDARD company sewing machines? I was just given one, and I am unable to even find a picture of it online anywhere. I have searched for days. It has an eagle with a tire around in on the bed of the machine. It is very plain looking, no fancy designs. I have tried to post pictures, but and error message says the site is unavailable. I know all about the history of the company and that Singer bought them out, but haven't found anything about my machine. The STANDARD name is in large letters on the body of the machine front.

miriam 08-02-2018 03:48 PM

I have two of them and they both have the chain stitch spider. Somewhere on QB is a good discussion of Standard machines and spiders. I like mine. It does a beautiful stitch.

Usually, when a photo won't post, it's too big for the forum. You need to reduce the size. You can do it by using a photo editing program. You can reduce it using Paint, which you can find under windows accessories on a Windows system.

https://auctionimages.s3.amazonaws.c.../135155958.jpgJust won this beauty at an estate sale auction. It is missing the needle clip(?) the thing that holds the needle in place. Do I have to find the matching part or is there a universal part for it?

MarkDean 08-28-2018 01:36 PM

I've read through many of these threads and found some very good information, thank you.
I would like to know if anyone knows of a site that offers the old tensioners complete for the HA1 machines.
The closest thing I have found is for the Singer 15-91 but they look to be backwards, meaning the spring seems to come out on the left where the HA1's that I have come out on the right side.
Thank You
Mark

terabob,
I've seen plenty of those on sewing parts online, you may have to do a little research to find the right one.
Like those colors on that Morse

What part do you need? Just a part or the whole thing?

Meaning the tensioners?

I'd like a couple new complete.

If you were talking to terabob, I apologize.

Can’t you just rebuild the existing? I do them routinely. The springs are available on line. This should be a tutorial I made https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...e-t269712.html
Feel free to ask questions or to pm.

‘Taming the 15 clone tension, well maybe’ is the title. The link failed to open for me. You may have to use search to find it. It is a discussion of 15 clone tensioners.

Thanks Miriam,
I was hoping to find a source for available tensioners for these machines, It just seems with all the tension units available there would be one that just bolts right on, only I don't know which one that would be, I hoped someone here would.

The one that started me on this quest was the first "clone" I bought and it's tensioner had been taken apart and parts lost, only I didn't know what parts those were because I was unfamiliar with exactly what it should have.
I have since found the exact match on ebay, but even though I no longer need one for this machine I still would like to know if any exist new that will work as replacements.

Thanks
Mark

Sew classic used to stock tension pieces other suppliers may, too
I doubt if you can just pop any old tensioner in.
You can buy the whole plate with a rebuilt tensioner from somebody who has extras laying around... it sounds like that is what you did.

It took me a bit to find out just what was missing, they obviously had broken their spring and then dismantled the tensioner to get the parts and fix it, but then never did.
The back plate for it was missing, the spring, and the small stop washer.
I found one on ebay complete with the nose plate and another that was just all in pieces, so I bought both.
I'm just starting with this, so I had no "parts" laying around to fix it and wasn't sure exactly what was missing.
Now I know that particular tensioner like the back of my hand, but still would like to find some complete.
I have a hunch that the The Singer HA #17 tensioner can be made to work and will look right on the machine (like original) but I haven't bought one of those yet to play around with it and find out.

miriam 08-30-2018 02:21 AM

I bought out an old sewing machine guy so I have some parts laying around but not always exactly what I need.

Can anyone find a manual or which cams go to this please. I have found no information on this model. There is tons of information on the 803A but nothing on this model of the 803 except I know it was made by Riccar. The casting of the machine has Riccar stamped on it. I would appreciate if you could find a clone like it somewhere. Must be one out there someplace. It is a Free-Westinghouse. Glowygirl2

Like Miriam said in the other thread, it's a badged Japanese machine. It could have been sold under a hundred different names. You probably won't find a manual under the name, you'll have to go by pics. Same with the cams, try to find a pic that shows a machine with its cams, then you'll know what to look for. Cam boxes rarely have a name on them and there are tons of different ones.

I have been gifted a vintage Singer sewing machine , SN# G 4070270, it appears to have been a treadle machine at one time minus the cabinet....Where could I find more information on this machine?

Thanks...

You may have a badged machine, which means there may be many other machines like yours but with different names on it. Perhaps if you start a new thread and post a picture of your machine. Photos need to be reduced in size to be able to post on QB.

What kind of information are you looking for? If it is a Japanese machine with zig zag capabilities you may want to look through this link https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...s-t207880.html

Helen Howes is moving but she is still wonderful at finding items for older machines, particularly British and European. I just ordered a front slide and a hand wheel for my Jones treadle as well as needles.

Hi i recently found this machine is a demolition job, and it looked too good to throw away, so i rescued it.

Thanks in advance

I am very interested in a Kenmore Model 158.1914. I wondered if anyone owned one and what their opinion is of this machine. I have a Singer 301 that I love and I am using it to piece a quilt. I love the way it stitches but I would like a mechanical machine that is reliable and does zigzag and used cams for different patterns. I'd love to have some advice.

According to https://www.quiltingboard.com/vintag...s-t306610.html that machine is a left-homing machine with super high shank feet.

Fabric Galore 07-09-2020 08:21 AM

Thanks Janey for the posts about the 1914. I wanted it mainly for the cams that allow for different designs. I use my Singer 301 for piecing. I will look into another machine as I wouldn't be able to line up the designs properly with a left leaning needle. I am looking for a reliable mechanical sewing machine. I have over $21,000 tied up in 3 electronic sewing machines and not one of them is working. I can still buy parts and accessories for my 301 but Janome only carries parts for 20 years and then you're out of luck.

Bgruhl 07-16-2020 01:45 AM

I love my Kenmore 158 Ultra 12 Stitch. I found it at Goodwill after my Singer 3337 locked up {the hand wheel will not turn at all}. I have quilted 5 quilts and kitchen curtains on it and recently found more feet and bobbins for it in a grab bag at goodwill. At first it was sluggish from the old oil in it so I oiled it and used it for a couple hours practicing the stitches and just giving it a good run and it runs like a brand new machine now

OurWorkbench 07-18-2020 06:59 PM

osewme posted a link to Janome manuals for current models. I thought I would post that they also have manuals for some of the retired models (It seems like I have looked for some that they don't have). The two links are https://www.janome.com/support/manuals/ and https://www.janome.com/support/retired-machine-manuals/ Janome also has a pdf for those looking to date an antique New Home sewing machine that was made in Orange, MA or Rockford IL, at https://www.janome.com/siteassets/su...anufacture.pdf

Also a year or so ago, the Singer website changed and consequently the previous link for singerco.com manuals don't work. The new link for Singer manuals is https://www.singer.com/support Another source for sewing machine manuals is https://www.manualslib.com/brand/ If you scroll down to brand and then clicking on "Sewing Machines" it will take you to a page that shows the manuals for that brand of the sewing machines that they have.

To figure out which Singer sewing machine you have, https://www.sandman-collectibles.com...r-machines.htm will walk you through to identify your machine. Sometimes, the serial numbers listed at http://ismacs.net/singer_sewing_mach...-database.html don't match the machine model. Sometimes one has misread the serial number and consequently think they have a different machine based on the serial number. This is particularly true with "G" serial numbers. However, even knowing this, I saw a 66 red head machine once, and quadruple checked the serial number on the machine to the serial number list, but it wasn't listed as the model for that serial number. I knew what a 66 looked like and I knew that only the 66 had Red Head decals.

Hope this helps.

I just received an old Pink Brother Model 1620 Deluxe ZigZag. Made in Japan. Can anyone share any resources as to where I could get some missing accessories for it? Thanks!

I'm guessing it looks similar to https://www.quiltingboard.com/7274412-post275.html It is a high shank machine. There is an adapter available so one can use low-shank snap on feet. One can be found at https://www.amazon.com/High-Shank-Sn.../dp/B004PC2TLC

Hopefully yours has a a tension assembly.

We like pictures. In order to post pictures on Quilting Board, you will probably need to reduce or compress the picture to a file size that is smaller than 2MB. How to post images can be found at https://www.quiltingboard.com/attach...020-01-17-.pdf
Don't forget to scroll over to the far right to find and click on the "Upload" button.

I have found that only the big red "Reply" button works to give me the paper clip icon to work for adding pictures.

I don't remember if I found a similar machine at http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine...g_Machines.htm or not.
