You really want some giggles, go look at the rest of his sewing stuff. Tension assemblies listed as addressographs.(What the heck is that?) Brass cap nuts and tire valve caps listed with brush caps. $25 for some rusty old common bobbins. I needed a laugh today.

That actually makes the deal even worse, since class 15 bobbins and cases are so plentiful.

LOL! Happy to help. I might even have a couple of 15 bobbins here that have no holes besides the one closest to the center. Are 66 bobbins that much more valuable? I have way more of those here than 15 bobbins.

Rodney 10-03-2014 10:47 PM

The vintage ones may be slightly less common than class 15 bobbins but they're still making class 66 bobbins too. I have had trouble with new 66 bobbins being too narrow at the outer lip. They don't fit vintage bobbin winders well. The ones I tried were cheap Singer packaged ones from Walmart. Bobbins from somewhere like Sew-Classic would probably be better.

I found my sanity improved once I stopped buying my supplies from WM or Fabricland (the Cdn equivalent of your Joann's) I suddenly miraculously became a better sewist and had a better behaved machine too.

Even the Canadian sewing machine parts supplier I use has several quality level listings for bobbins. I've always stuck with the "premium" or "Japanese made" bobbins and not had a problem. I've even told people I order parts for that I won't order the junk, it's not worth me having to troubleshoot it when it fails and then having to send things back and compensate them, etc.

Rodney 10-04-2014 10:38 AM

I still find it sad and ironic that the Singer branded ones are such junk. I bought a vintage pack of Singer bobbins a while back and the difference in width between old and new was visible. You would think that the company that designed the bobbins would keep them the same size.

IMO - Singer had been "junk" for a long time. I think they may have improved some, but when I was a young adult and sewing for profit, (30 years ago) Singer was one brand to stay away from. Maybe their industrial machines were better, though I don't recall the two sewing factories I worked in having any Singer machines. The alterations places didn't like Singers, and those sewing from home didn't like Singer home machines either.

ISMACS says it best - when looking over their Singer decals, the last one they show is a 513

and the next item on the list

"then it all went horribly wrong . . ."

Rodney 10-04-2014 11:33 AM

I hate to say it but ISMACS' cutoff is pretty close to right. The touch & sews were the beginning of the end. Complicated and they started using plastic gears, this coming from someone who likes them.

Technically, they're not the same company that designed the bobbins (I think it's Joe who can tell you more about that),... and even as the company who made them the most popular.... that Singer is long gone. They haven't been "that Singer" for a lot of years. :(

I wish I could find cabinets with matching stools for $25 around here.

Cabinets are easy enough. Matching stools-not so much. That cabinet in the picture was made with better materials than anything you'll find at Ikea.

No one is selling anything here for 5 or 10 - definitely not at the thrift stores or yard sales - they add a few more zeros and double the numbers - many who are selling treasures or Grandmas's stuff quote epay and petsy in their ads. Sometimes I might get a good "find" at a reasonable price but I drive about 3 or 4 hrs to pick up - when I factor in the gas spent to get there and back I guess the bottom line is that I really wanted it so I was willing to pay - along with a day out and about with a bit adventure - never know what I might find on the way :)

Rodney 10-05-2014 10:45 AM

CD it sold for $59.99. I'd say someone got a great deal for those particular parts. I know I would have loved to have them for my 1903 model 27.

Here's an unusual one. A long bobbin Kenmore. I think it's the only one I've seen. Almost looks like a refurb.

Overpriced but nice. And no, it would not make a nice bar.

We had a pretty parlor cabinet; not quite as ornate as this one. My dad did turn it into a liquor cabinet. Sniff....

I have sold 403s with a cabinet and matching stool for under $100, but still had to sit on that for 6 months. A cabinet and stool with no machine would sit that long for me at $25. I agree it's better quality than Ikea, but it's also above Ikea's price for similar furniture. ;)

If it was worth the gas, I'd say come get them whenever I have them. ;) At one time I had 3 with stools and about 5 others without. I had a whole command center set up so that I could sort files and junk while I was cleaning up the basement to make space for the studio. The studio's been together for going on a year, and I just sold the last cabinet about 2 weeks ago.

It's a White built machine. The last Kenmore long bobbin machine I think was that bright pink one they sold late 50's, early 60's. I don't remember who built that one.

Unless it's actually a full size case the proportions look right for a Singer 99. The bottom is taller than the 128 cases.
The price is right until you factor in gas and drive time.

Yea, but I’m always leery about shipping. I’m “anti-shipping” and I’d rather go and pick things up myself, but I just couldn’t do it this time. At last check, it had left the Bismarck ND USPS facility (it originated in New Salem ND) headed my way. I’m hoping for the best. That’s all I can do.

I think they're referring to the thread take-up lever or needle bar. Or maybe it's just frozen (not bobbin' up and down :D ) Still seems very cheap.

For one in that condition??? It is not all that cheap.

Rodney 10-06-2014 02:39 AM

I'd say a fair price. Model 15s tend to be listed for a little more than other machines in this market. But still given that it's stuck and there's no case or cabinet I wouldn't call it a bargain.

That’s what I thought too. I don’t see them come up on eBay (or anywhere else) very often. And when they do, they usually go for more than that. I was surprised to see that it was a Buy It Now auction too.

I’ve seen several (genuine) Singer boss-mount handcranks go for that amount or more in the past few months.

I’m really anxious for it to get here.

This American picker will never get a TV show.

Cari

On the surface, I tended to agree with you. But in looking a little further into it, it’s probably not a bad marketing strategy. He does a lot of Buy It Now/Make Offer auctions. If you look at his Sold Auctions, many of them are Best Offer Accepted.

So, if you research your item to get a value, then offer the item for 4 times that amount, some buyers that really want an item may unknowingly Buy It Now (@4x), others may Make an Offer for half of the asking price (@2x), and you can accept offers that are a quarter of the asking price (@1x). You can cover all of the different buyers, and have a pretty good markup on every item that you sell.

I agree. $30 for a Singer 15 in good working and good cosmetic condition is a good price. This one is neither.

In my limited experience watching CL, prices for 15s are all over the map, from free to $300. My 15-90 in very good condition was $15. My 15-91 in excellent condition was $50. Both came in the same type of table (neither of which is in good shape) and neither came with feet/attachments.

I've seen a recurring 15-91 ad for $250 in Aberdeen claiming "I know what these are worth." Well, they're only worth what someone is willing to pay. Sure it's in great condition but so is mine:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...d=494416&stc=1

Was I just lucky? Or just patient?

Rodney 10-06-2014 05:48 AM

Beautiful machine. I like the pattern on that one too. You don't see it as much as others.
Rodney

KenmoreRulesAll 10-06-2014 06:08 AM

Thanks, Rodney. In thrift stores, I used to walk right by these machines wondering why anyone would buy them. I'll bet my ignorance was pretty expensive.
