It's a 117.840. Same as the 841 but different slide plate configuration. My 841 is in that same cabinet as the Goodwill one but Mom kept it pristine. That one has seen better days. I got my spare 841 on Craigslist for $25. I guess that's the going rate. It was an expensive machine when new. That machine, in that cabinet cost $ 324 in 1957. I have a copy of the page from the Sears catalog.

Here's a pretty machine but OMG the cabinet is soooooo PINK! The seller thinks the pink is giving this beautiful machine a new life!

it is a pretty machine. too bad she was a sloppy cabinet painter --pink paint on the machine bed.

Rodney 07-06-2015 08:01 PM

The pink can be stripped off but I know I'm not fond of getting paint out of the pores in oak.
They didn't think quartersawn white oak was pretty?

Remember the links 10X posted about machines being sold in the Philippines? This one just thinks it's special because it's got it's name on the treadle. (that is pretty cool)

Cari

The decals are garish enough to be Chinese or Indian made (hard to say which, bad taste is everywhere ;)) but it does show some signs of wear and age. 1970s maybe?
On the "Singer" branded machines the feed dog drop knob is a sure indicator though they also make new base model 15 copies without the knob as well. I'm not sure if any of those say "Singer" on them though. The Asian made Singer 15s are real authorized Singer machines but they're pale shadows of the originals and shouldn't be confused with the originals or sold as "antiques".

Some one in FL needs to get these - no giggles though.

I would but shipping to Canada would kill me. ;) Besides, Canada Post would just lose it, like they just lost the last thing I ordered, or park a forklift on it.

There are some pretty interesting machines in there, I'll be interested to watch this one.

Rodney 07-08-2015 08:46 AM

Someone needs to. There's an RAF in that lot along with a Redeye in good condition and a 201. Someone would have a very good start on a Singer collection.

A great deal on an early Davis. I hope someone here can get it.

You and me both. How someone could take a piece of maple, mahogany, oak or walnut furniture, cover it with that cr*p and think it's worth 5 times as much $$ is beyond my comprehension. Don't they know how much work it is to get that paint OFF?????

It is like gilding a lily with mud.

SteveH 07-09-2015 07:02 AM

I can see the artwork, a beautiful white lily with a "shabby chic" paint job... Caption "The end is near folks..."

I'm sorry for anyone who disagrees -- it's not my intent to offend, but to paint an antique sewing machine cabinet is an absolute sacrilege. The original wood and the artistry of the person who built the cabinet (albeit in a factory) is totally ruined by application of that crap! It is very hard to remove the paint, not to mention the damage done to the wood in the process! That's a lazy person's method of "refinishing" a cabinet! Just garbage! JMHO!

You're not offending me Jeanette, I totally agree with you. Though I recently got a cabinet for a 99 that's been painted white and I'm leaning towards leaving it that way just because it will be such a pain to strip it down.

Rodney 07-09-2015 04:16 PM

Tastes change over the years. Although I hate to see them (or any antique furniture) painted too there is a bright side. A paint job at least keeps things in use as opposed to in the landfill or fire. We don't complain about the stuff that's destroyed because we never see it.
Right now we're a definite minority. Most people don't see the value of old sewing machines or their cabinets as anything more than decorations or plant stands.
"People actually sewed with those things?"
Rodney

Quincunx 07-09-2015 07:38 PM

Here is the question. With that machine put in that not at all matching stand. What were they TRYING to use it for and did they put too much wear on the machine?

Macybaby 07-13-2015 07:28 AM

I've got a headache from looking on eBay - seems you get one totally misinformed seller - and others use that info to determine what they have!

Today, I've seen several top clamp greist attachment sets (with cardboard liner, so later ones) listed as SINGER Late 1800's. One is even says "Standard" and the sellers says its a standard Singer set . . . At least I hope most people with Singers would be smart enough to know that a top clamp set for Standard won't fit their machine.

Rodney 07-13-2015 09:02 AM

I hate that too. Well I suppose if they sell them as Singer and they actually won't fit a Singer then they're responsible for refunding the person's money. It is a hassle though.

A lot of nice machines in my area lately. Here's another one. Minnesota A with a beautiful parlor cabinet. $60.

Rodney

Macybaby 07-13-2015 10:30 AM

Oh- that one does hurt! Though it does not say anything about there being a machine inside . . .

Sure wish there was a way to find out the "End of the story" on some of these - can only hope that someone who knows what it is ends up with it.

Rodney 07-13-2015 10:35 AM

That's my hope too. If I get one I have machines to fit (don't we all in this group?). Although not original I'd probably put my Rodney machine in it.

Nice looking machines but none are worth $85. I'd pick the Compac and the Commander.

That may have been a hoax. The listing has been taken down, and I saw one on either Oklahoma City or Dallas Craig’s List just a few minutes ago that sounds like your description, but now that I look again, I can’t find the listing at either place.....
