A good deal on what looks like a 401A. Is the desk a Singer item?

Rodney, that desk is more typical of Pfaff, especially with the hole to get at the bobbin case.

I've got one that is the same chair/table but does not have the two sets of side drawers, so it's very compact.

Singer and Pfaff are interchangeable in the cabinets. You may have to take out or put in a lift, but the hinges line up and work with either.

Rodney 06-24-2015 02:21 PM

I didn't think Singer made a chair/desk combo like that but I'm a long way away from knowing everything there is to know about sewing machines.
Thanks Cathy.

A cedar lined bread box?

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/atq/5054295928.html

Caroline94535 06-24-2015 07:59 PM

Oh I'm just going to cry.

Doctors have a motto of "First, do no harm." People should take that concept to heart when dealing with sewing machines, cabinets, and "good, old stuff" in general. (Just my not-so-humble opinion!)

And do we really want cedar-infused baked goods?

Valeriekat 06-25-2015 01:41 AM

To avoid accidentally parting out good machines...
My clever friend Allison puts on different color spools of thread on her machines to show which ones need work, which ones do work and which ones she may be willing to part with!

ArchaicArcane 06-28-2015 10:55 PM

This table confuses me... why would I want all that space on the right? Assemble wrong maybe?

It would be my luck to forget what color thread was what.......

It almost looks like a table you put together yourself and it was done wrong.

That's my guess. They put it together wrong.

SteveH 06-29-2015 07:44 AM

Oh yeah, I am SURE you'll get this asking price....

LOL I just saw that ad and laughed too!

ArchaicArcane 06-29-2015 09:07 AM

So they managed to install the lift and everything the wrong way around? Or just the hinges on the wrong end? Sounds like someone who was allergic to instructions! ;)

I think the pic may have been mirror imaged. All the put it together yourself furniture I've seen has the holes pre drilled so getting it THAT wrong would have been almost impossible.

Sewnoma 06-29-2015 01:38 PM

I was scratching my head on that one. Mirror imaged makes a lot of sense. Or, maybe it's from a parallel universe where left-handedness is predominant?

You never know. LOL

I'm left handed, why didn't I think of that? lmbo

Cari

That's why I was so confused. I think you'd actually have to drill new holes and such to get it that wrong.
You're probably right, it's mirror imaged but that's usually a fair bit of work too - unless it's a selfie and you're using the front camera on a phone... Either way, it looks like someone went to a lot of work to confuse me. ;)

Jeanette Frantz 06-29-2015 03:07 PM

Perhaps the cabinet was designed for a left-handed person! LOL! Either that, or, maybe, the door shown on the picture is actually the back side of the cabinet?????? I honestly don't know -- just purely guessing!

Black 301 $50.

It's tempting, but no.

If I were there I would be bargaining for the machine without the table. It seems they have no big interest in the machine and are talking the table up big.

Rodney 06-30-2015 07:04 AM

I never read the description. ;)
I saw the paint job and my thought was "At $50 bring both home. The table can be stripped later. It's worth saving." You can't buy the walnut to make that stand for $50 and these people painted it. It's also a pretty nice stand. Singer produced some very nice furniture up until particle board took over some time during the mid century. This stand is earlier than that.

Rodney I had to go back and take a second look, painted it looks different but that's the same walnut cabinet my black 301 came in. May have been a standard cabinet for them back then. If I had any room left I'd call my mom and have her go get it.(She lives in Washougal) So far, I've brought two cabinets to the house I'm trying to empty out!

Cari

wilburness 07-01-2015 06:55 AM

A 301 in the midwest would be gobbled up at that price $50. and black!

Cari-in-Oly 07-01-2015 08:42 PM

Here's a nice looking embossed White:

So what is they are really selling?

SteveH 07-02-2015 08:29 AM

I get what happened, but the title with picture is great!

"manual bending & sewing machine"

I bet they just grabbed pictures off of the internet that looked "similar" to whatever they're trying to sell. Because all old black sewing machines are the same, right?

sews 07-03-2015 08:10 PM

This one?

https://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/hsh/5095032566.html

Or this one:

https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/hsh/5105155564.html

(Rhetorical question, I already got one for $20.
But, seriously, what is the value of these sewing machines? :p )

Rodney 07-04-2015 09:37 AM

Sews I really wish I had the $25 for the second one. The missing cover plate might be a challenge to find though.
The value is somewhere in between to me. I see the $25 one as a bargain and the $200 one as being overpriced.
Rodney

Macybaby 07-04-2015 11:07 AM

I'd love to get one of those "Fair Lady" Whites. There is one for sale locally, for several months, and at $275 it may never sell.

Yeah, that's a little steep. The Fair Lady is the most coveted of the white machines, but IIRC, it's another one that's got a fatal gear in it.

As for the two in the ads, if they were to switch cabinets then both would be more fairly priced.

Cari

Rodney 07-04-2015 02:17 PM

The ad for the $25 one is gone. I hope it went to a good home.

Right, really makes you wonder.

Rodney 07-05-2015 10:32 AM

No giggles. I just like this one. Any Lindas in the group?
http://www.shopgoodwill.com/auctions...-22608628.html
I like the way the company took the time for details like the matching treadle stand and guarantee plate. "No "Linda" machine is genuine without this plate." :)
Rodney

wilburness 07-05-2015 11:23 AM

I seen that one at Goodwill. for some reason it just looks a little fake to me. I think someone customized this for their self. has anyone heard of a "Linda" machine? it sells today. but look atthe decals, they are not worn. oh well too far for me

sews 07-05-2015 12:00 PM

Here's a story about a very similar looking one, the "Butterfly", brand new hand crank, made in China:
http://dragonpoodle.blogspot.com/201...imaginary.html

The Linda one looks like a genuine clone to me...

Rodney 07-05-2015 02:03 PM

It would be easy enough to fake the decal. I think the badge would show more dedication than most people would have.
I think it's real. Sewing machines got all sorts of goofy names. Just check my avatar. ;)
Rodney

Cari-in-Oly 07-05-2015 02:39 PM

Okay guys, we've had this lesson before. The feed drop knob on the bed tells you it's a modern reproduction. The 15 class repros are still being made and sold under many different names. Remember the links 10X posted about machines being sold in the Philippines? This one just thinks it's special because it's got it's name on the treadle. (that is pretty cool)

Cari

Quincunx 07-06-2015 01:47 PM

The cabinet is not pretty. But it looks like a standard sized White base. It looks very much like Kenmore 117.841 the pink-ish version but the slide plate is wrong.
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/atq/5109113180.html

No giggles from my shopgoodwill area lately. In fact someone in there has gotten very smart. A listing went last week for a "National" sewing machine. It was badged. But the worker knew enough about sewing machines to know it was a badge and listed what it WAS instead.
