The 301, the 401/403/411/431/500/503 machines I've had here have all had the fiber gear as well.

As far as durability, I've read here that an OSMG on another list has said he's never seen a fiber gear break... but.... as Steve mentions it's a mechanical "fuse". I've always been concerned about those 60 odd year old gears, which is why I've always told people that the 15-90 is pretty much as beefy without the potential self-destruct button. If it runs into a problem, the belt will slip. If the 15-91 runs into trouble, the potential is there for the gear to break, and they're not easily available. I think I found one source at some point...

In practice, I've pierced as much or more with the 15-90 as the 15-91. I had a guy bring me some old hard naughahyde to try sewing and the 15-90 actually did it better than the 15-91.

Realistically, for most of our uses, the main benefit of the potted motor is the lack of intrusion into the harp area.

They sure could have put some more energy into quieting down that hook mechanism instead ;)

vmaniqui 01-13-2014 11:07 PM

I m rewiring a potted motor. Now I will see what that fiber gear is. There is a 15-90 for sale here for $45. Hmm I thunk I should check it out.

oldsewnsew 01-14-2014 05:28 AM

If I'm not mistaken, the reason you don't see broken gears on 15-91 and 201-2(& other Singers?) is because it has a spring to absorb shock...

GreyQ 01-14-2014 09:34 AM

I just saw a Singer 222 listed for $1100 on the Minneapolis CL. Even for a free that seems pricey.
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...286760845.html
Same person has a 221 for $300.

That's possible. There is a spring mechanism in all of them. You can see it at work when you press then release the pedal. I've watched it and thought it looked like a good safety, but it still seems to me that 60 years on, things get weaker (springs included) and stuff can happen that wasn't as much of an issue before. That said, if no one sees them break, maybe that's why replacements aren't readily available.

I think it sounds like a good deal, depending on what it comes with, case, etc.
I FMQed my first quilt on the 15-90, so I have a soft spot. For the machine, not the quilt. The quilt was awful ;)

There are 222s that are probably worth that, but that's probably not one of them. The ones with the Red S badge and all the accessories, including the manual (which goes for more than $100 on eBay - yes, actually sells for that.) in a 8-9-10 condition should go for that in a heart beat. That said, they're harder to find in the US, and that drives the price up.

I'm also surprised to see that faceplate on it. You don't usually see that plate on post 1950s machines and hence no 222s. I wonder if it was snagged from a 221.

thats a beauty and at a reasonable price IMO. Glad I don't live closer to it! "Careful what you look for, you might find it"

manicmike 01-14-2014 01:52 PM

This one's so rare it's probably not outrageously over-priced, but I had to post the link because it's so beautiful.

If only I had room for it, oh and of course a lazy two grand lying around ;)

I need to grumble about something.
If you list a machine on CL in the middle of garage sale type listing (Everything must go! Priced to move! recliner, couch, kitchen supplies, vintage sewing machine) and someone contacts you about it. Don't assume they are going to offer you top dollar if you don't know what you have. "NO! It's worth more than that!"
Then research the machine, make a listing for just it, set a price, take a picture.
/grumble

(I know, I know.. it's craigslist. Still, I needed to grumble.)

LOL -I couldn't not ask :). No answer yet.

Family Heirloom and an $850 starting price = "See? I tried"

Yankeegirl 01-17-2014 06:34 PM

Used the term rare because she couldn't find one like it - I gave her a link to QB - a member purchased one almost exactly like hers in awesome condition for $30.00. Hopefully she will get her head out of the clouds. :)

deplaylady 01-17-2014 09:43 PM

I found a really cute Singer cabinet on CL today, well it would be if they didn't mess up the finish. It comes with 15-91 - they want $225. Too much for me!
http://rochester.craigslist.org/atq/4227761733.html

Did see a lot of over priced machines, like this one:
Singer Industrial Zig-Zag Sewing Machine - $950
http://rochester.craigslist.org/bfs/4223612165.html

and a couple of ones that are tempting:

Antique Singer Sphinx foot crank sewing machine - $60 (Love the 'foot' crank!)
http://rochester.craigslist.org/atq/4227761733.html

401 with a case - also $60

The cabinet on the 15 just looks sanded to me.

You can see the original finish on the top. They really ruined it.

I watched this thinking there was an entry error made, but it has been re-listed at the same price.

i emailed the guy the last time around and sarcastically asked him about the price and told him he must be joking or been drinking.

I so want to ask this seller for a picture of these on a Singer machine! If someone believes him, they are going to be very disappointed!

Technically the Japanning and decals are probably OK... the shellac is trashed though.... *sigh*
No Bobbin case either.

Wilquilter 01-20-2014 09:46 PM

We used machines identical to those in high school and I am NOT that old!! I don't think it is really that old. They did work nicely. The school sold them for $25. I wish I had purchased one.

That first one has me stumped - can't find the serial number in ISMACS - only interested because it's a "silver".
I like the "matching stool" makes me wonder what makes someone think they match? Maybe they both have wood on them? I do have the stool that would be the mate for that style cabinet (also sold by Singer).

Ismacs says:

JA series

1924
- 1936

The stool matches because they're both perceived gold mines... ;)

I have a 1925 Singer Sewing machine for sale (see pics). The minimum value for this vintage begins at about $400 on ebay. I'm entertaining offers over $200.

trivia42 01-24-2014 05:39 PM

Craigslist. No pic, just 22,000 worth of sewing machine, so they say. Guess that's more incentive to get mine running! *headdesk*
