Ouch!! Is the machine as bad as the case? You may get another case if it is able to be salvaged. It is a shame...looks like a very pretty machine.

By the way, all the new machines are fabulous!! I have been watching, but not posting much. The sewing machine fairy came last night. Left two of the saddest machines you have ever seen on my front porch. I could not take pics they were so ugly. One is a 128, in a wooden carrying case, or the remnants of one. It was flapping in the breeze and had more roach droppings in it than I had ever seen. I opened it up, and started trying to clean it up, and it is a black side machine. Rusty though and saving the finish is not an option, so I soaked it with WD40 and it turns already. The other one was a Singer 626, with even more roach droppings. I mean the entire machine was just gross, but got the air compressor to it, and still trying to get it to move. Pretty pink face plate on it and abused beyond belief. Go figure. You would think the fairy would bring a good one some time. LOL No power cords with either, but we will see what I can produce out of them. You know us sewing machine folks cannot help but try to help the poor orphans.

I forgot I had this :). Not really, just didnt' think of it in terms of vintage until I saw someone mention 1975.

My bosses dad gave me this and the cabinet it came it, right before his wife died 2 years ago. He died a month later.

At the time I messed with it a little and couldnt' get a decent stitch so I put it away. I kept trying to find information but i keep coming up blank.

A couple months ago I got her out and cleaned the bobbin area and oiled her really good. Messed with her all night and finally got her humming and producing and awesome stitch! This led me on a search again and somehow I found this virtual vintage shop :)

The receipt says 9/18/1973 (YES, I have his original receipt!) and I do not know if he bought it new or used. I'm guessing new. It is a Domestic 816 Green. The S/N is 2111. I can't find a manual on THIS model :(

Just a couple of comments on this. First of all, packing peanuts are not a good choice for shipping machines. They easily become crushed and don't provide enough protection for heavy machines. Ditto on newspaper. Yes, I've seen some packers that use them effectively, but they use them as filler rather than protection.
Also, I believe you'll find the hinges on this machine are a bit smaller than the Singer 99 or 128, and if you use those, you'll have to modify the base.
Yes--my first BelAire Bantam arrived just like this. And several other machines as well. The really GOOD sellers will listen to you when you tell them how to pack your machine. I just had a first time seller (first for a machine anyway) completely unpack and repack a machine I bought from him on my recommendations. In return, I sent him extra shipping money. And great feedback. Win-win.

Having computer woes here; my main computer is down and probably dead. I have lost all the photos I keep telling myself I'm going to back up. #$%&

Most sellers have no idea that machines are as fragile as china.

jtapp9, my 301 has a diffuser over the lightbulb. I checked the book and it says to remove the lamp cover before changing the bulb. Can you sew without it? - I would think so. Might have a glare on the black machine.

qltndog, to grease (Singer Lubricant) the 301's spiral gears, you take off the top by removing 2 screws on the top and apply the lubricant to the gears on the right side. There are two spots, one on the far right and one more to left and front. Then flip her over, remove the bottom cover and fill the grease tube, again on the right. There are some oil spots in both areas, too. My printed manual says to do the top gears once a year and the grease tube every six months.

AnnieRose, the 301, gets quieter with every oiling and with use. There is a tiny click sound that may be inherent to the machine. I remember hearing it long ago in home ec and those were new machines. My other machine is an Elna SU which is virtually silent, so all machines sound noisy to me.

All the 'new' machines are so special.
Bojangles, It's a shame about the packaging. My ebay seller did a wonderful job. S/He used very heavy bubblewrap and the strongest package tape I've ever had to remove inside a very heavy cardboard box.

Nancy, I feel so bad for you. I know how excited I get when I bring home a new SM or anticipate arrival of one through the mail. I hope the SM was not damaged.
