Why not? Am exploring but completely undecided about even looking at, let alone buying it. I already have perhaps more than enough vintage machines.

Unappealing to look at(to me anyway) and not one of the more collectable Singers. Probably because it only does straight and zig zag and was a lower end machine at the time where machines offered many other stitches. This series of machine has just never impressed me at all to be honest. But, if it's a good price and you have the room, why not?

I have several 99 handcranks, native and converted, but as you say, they're heavy! So I talked Cathy out of one of her aluminum 99s, and want to try it as a handcrank. I am fond of 99s.

I have a Singer 237, its a simple machine and works well. It uses a 15x1 modern needle and metal class 15 bobbins, needle goes in flat to the right & threads left to right.
My machine is run by treadle power, it came to me with a stretch motor belt that was too small and ruined the motor; thus it became a treadle machine. It was only $20, nice having a zig zag treadle. It was made in Italy and only offered as a treadle there, has a deep groove in the handwheel; so no modification is required to treadle it.
I have done FMQ on several baby quilts with this machine, does it very nicely too. You can see my machine here:

I know you said to forget, but thought I'd answer your 2nd question and say that those do not need the 206x13 needle. They use the standard 15x1 needle.
