The lotus . This one was a great story, started in UK.. came here via boat and in a treadle, made it way to mid west via a covered wagon, granny then had it coverted to electric, Then back in the wagon to oregon ... upon pick up the story changed to teh grannys sister and got a bit wilder ...Oooo I bought it off craigslist LOL and this is my hi $ machine, yep I ponyed up a 100 bucks for it he wanted 125...
let me say this this machine was used very little if at all....the elec converstion must have been done by a singer dealer, they even change the hand wheel to one I have never seen, you'll say it's the same, but all elec handwheels that I have are just black no chorme. The singer is gold, on the bed the center decal is showing silver.... and around the beds edge, the green should have gold above it as most singer bed decals, those are flacking away, I see very few lotus's that still have those... http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8904.jpg http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8905.jpg |
Sphinx, from what I have seen there are 3 different design's of this one...
no yarn to spin on this one. I will say to paid more than most would have, but I had to have one. upon seeing it at 10 feet you could not tell what the decals where. at 2 feet you could see a part of the head and tip of a wing... This machine was a lacquer thinner, sand paper, rubbing compound, and a complete tear down, by that I mean every shaft and bushing came out, it was a grease ball inside, Then the kitchen sink, every silver part took an acid bath. in other words I do everything they say to not do... I've been cleaning dirty rusted car parts for 50+ years, these machines are not a bit different to clean... what looks silver is, at the bottom of the column the decal is a bit silver that was done using palmolive dish soap, before it was nothing but that nasty brown stain I don't have a spare singer cabinet so she will be a looksee machine, plus it doesn't have a motor mount http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8900.jpg |
the red eye. This is #2 for me #1 is in a treadle , $25 outside was so so as far as being clean, the underside looked like new. This guy had another machine for 5 bucks, it's cabinet was in at least 5 pieces.. so why not ?
if you can look very close at the singer tag, do you see anything wrong ? ok a hint look at the decal.. it must have been a monday morning machine,,, or the employee knew why the drawers have locks.... http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8817.jpg the 5$ monkey wards streamliner and her cabinet in action again.. This is the early model, where the grill is a part of the front cover , later the grill was a add on part, even later they changed and the grill ran up the cover also... Makes you want to go on a train ride,, http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8925.jpg http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8923.jpg I'll add her sister ...from another mother... there both natoinals, this is a international rotary, both have built in motors that are not spring loaded and wheel driven, both had the same problem, but then they are the same machine with a body change...anyway both when used smelled like old hair clippers, cleaning the motor took about 15 mintues each they ran ok to fair, http://i922.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/100_8914.jpg |
Notsureif, we aren't suppose to discuss machines on this site - it is a photo site, so come on over to the Vintage Shop where we can all ooooooh and aaaaaah over your machine! Thanks for posting photos and all the info about the machines! So interesting and fun to read about these old gals/guys!

I found this one at an Estate Sale over the weekend. $5 Minnehaha. I think it's a branded Standard? This is my first treadle machine and I'm looking forward to getting it cleaned up and running.

I love that Minnehaha!

I watched the video...it showed how to wind it, but not how to put the bobbin in the shuttle or the shuttle into the machine...I know, this is the place for pictures...I will post again when it's clean!
