I won an auction of a Singer treadle machine. I need to replace the belt (purchased it from a Singer dealer) but have some questions:
the bobbins are the tiny spindles--but there were several round bobbins in the drawer and I can't actually see how any bobbin its in--maybe something is missing?

there is not spool pin

I can see some of the serial #, but about half are hard to read

I got 2 wooden boxes (they are so neat, fold out flat) that have several feet and other "parts"(that I can't identify)--but the bobbin plate cover seems to be missing.

I'll work on trying to get the number posted & a picture posted. But any ideas would be helpful.

My Singer treadle has the long bobbins that fit into a shuttle that sits in a cradle under the throat plate. If you slide open the throat plate in front of the foot, can you see a cradle that a shuttle would fit in?

Frequently, when we get these old machines there are parts and manuals that come with them that do not have anything to do with the machine. If the slide plates go from front to back it would be a 27. If the bobbin cover is on the side, it is probably a 15 or 66.

I'm going to guess that the machine you have is probably a 27 and is a long shuttle like Tartan's. There are many manuals for these machines on the internet. One of which can be found at https://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollec...0673/index.htm the instructions and what came in the "puzzle box" of attachments can be found at https://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollec...0675/index.htm There others and some are in pdf form.

Oh good, you have 2 shuttles that go with the long bobbins. The round bobbins must be for a different machine. A lovely Singer Sphinx machine!

And I'm guessing the little bullet shaped gizmos with the circular bobbins is actually what the spindle bobbins go into. As you can see, the front part of the bobbin cover is missing. And I have lots of duplicate feet--figure someone just threw everything into the machine before the auction. Thanks!

I'm so excited after I looked at the link that Janey provided. I think this is a beautiful machine--look at those decals! Next question--what to I clean the machine with? I don't want to ruin any of the decals. With the schematic from the manual, the next thing I'm going to do is sort the attachments and see what extras are there. Then I need to hunt for a spool pin and the cover over the bobbin 'case'. Any suggestions? Oh, and the serial # is C7309950

There is also a singer antique sewing machine website online - however I cannot remember the website, perhaps one of the other readers will know where to direct you. I have ordered some items from them in the past, and found them to be very helpful.

Sewing machine oil (SMO) for all parts black or with decals. Soft cotton cloth to gently dust, then SMO. Remove shiny metal parts, slides, inspection plates, nose plate. A good metal polish will clean these.

You can also use a heavy cotton yarn, like sugar n cream, with a dab of metal polish, wrapped and crossed once around the presser bar and needle bar, pulled left and right, to clean those. Any surface rust can be removed with 0000 steel wool, I like to use steel wool for the handwheel edge.

Your machine is gorgeous, and with a light cleaning and an oiling of the machine and the treadle legs, should sew again easily.

Oh my, DH had a Sphinx machine and sewed so many quilts on it!! He not only wore off the decals on the sewing surface but the black paint as well. Looks like you will need a belt, you can get one of leather but vinyl works too if you don't mind how it looks.
