Cari,
Does dashboard just apply to the made in Japan machines or all of them? My gran had a Kenmore that looked a lot like these.

Not limited to Japan; just the very busy front of the machines.

Sears did not make anything. They were marketers. White (An American company) made most of the earlier Kenmore machines, then there were a few German made Kenmores, then they were Japanese made Kenmores. So, your grandmother may very well have had a Japanese made machine.

I think that Japan did the best job of "dashboard" sewing machines. However, other countries used other design elements from the 50/60's as well.

Here's the "Rocketeer", a American made machine from that era:

Thank you. She is similar to the Fleetwood pictured by Leonf. I won't be able to post a photo until my IT guy (DH!!) gets home. I did bring her into our local sewing store....and determined she was meant as a garment sewing machine. Her feet are a bit wider than a quarter inch. I couldn't find a quarter inch foot to fit her.

Not necessarily. If it's a left needle machine there may not be a 1/4inch foot.

That never occurred to me, as I've never encountered a "lefty". I just looked it up. Now I know.
