Default Singer 301 - flexible spool pin?

Hi all -

my 301 is missing the flexible spool pin on the bed of the machine. (It's hard to tell if it was broken off or was removed.) I would like to replace it with another flexible pin, and have not had luck finding one.

DH says it looks a lot like the metal covering from...old bicycle cable.

Anyone know of a source or similar replacement?

Thanks!

Sew Classic sells plastic spool pins. They are very inexpensive. I had that issue with a 301 and just used a small drillbit to drill out the remains of the old pin and then put a new one in.

Neither one of mine are flexible. They just look like long narrow bolts. I have a 1952 and a 1956. I'm not much of a purist. Anything that works and looks decent would do for me.
I even used a cut down bamboo skewer to replace a missing one on a Singer someone given to me. The machine is a plastic wonder so I didn't care as long it is functional for my granddaughter.

Www.novamontgomery.com has replacement spool pins for $3.00 each. Look under 'Shop' on her website.

She has spool pin springs that go over the spool pins, not the spool pins themselves. Best bet for an original replacement is to watch auction sites for someone parting out a 301.

Oh gee I just saw this again and realized my spool pin answer was false.. I replaced a spool pin on my 401 not 301. Yes the 301 has an odd type pin. I agree, if you want the same type you'll have to haunt eBay and watch for the part to show up.

My spool pin on the bed of my 1956 301 is also missing. I don't remember breaking it, but it's gone now. I just set a cone of thread on the floor and wind the bobbins from there.
