I use a rotary hole punch, which your local hardware store almost certainly has for 10 or 20 bucks. But it lacks the panache of a dedicated, vintage tool.

That does look like a nice one. I bought one on Amazon some time ago (search for treadle plier) and it is OK. The hole where the belt goes is a bit big and so you have to be really careful to keep the punch centered as you squeeze down. Much better than a nail however and $40, although not exactly cheap, is still better than a nail and a pair of pliers.
Cheaper by far than an ER visit. Mine came with a pre 1900 machine.

Another illness... I collect these too... Most need new blades and or puncher points, but the most annoying thing in the punch is too big. So for practicality, I live them to close the staple, but not so much to the hole.
