You may be able to find a replacement spring. Keep the screw, too!

on 66s and 99s the needle plate must be unscrewed and removed for proper installation. The bobbin slide is slid into place from under the needle.

These springs are available; Sew Classic has them, I think, or did. Find online how to install the re-springed plate: it's a little counterintuitive.

Added: Yep, they have the spring, pretty cheap, and mounting boxes for $35. There ya go.

You still need to oil and grease the machines, remember metal on metal?? Oil, Oil.

Thanks all. The bases are out of stock so I'll keep checking sew classic as well as the etsy shop. In the meantime I might just cobble together a workable base.
