Nancy- I only teach informally. I am mostly self taught, but did take a class from Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran. I figure that a machine is made to do work, and as long as I am not asking it to work above it's capacity in power, I should be able to get it to do what I want it to. I learned just about everything on my 201, if I had had a 15 first, I might be singing it's praises. I find that every machine I work on or use gets compared to the 201. it is my favorite in a herd of 20 or so. The phrase that helps me the most when FMQ is this: "hot foot, slow hands", meaning I run the machine quite fast and move my hands more slowly. Laura
Wow, Laura it is always so nice to hear from the 'other' side! I am glad someone has had a good experience with the 201 and FM! So this tells me, maybe the horizontal hooks can do FM if the 'carbon based' unit in front is what? More patient, slower with their hands, something? You must be pretty good if you are teaching FM! There is a great FM teacher in my area who teaches at the local quilt stores. I have taken a couple of her classes. She doesn't care what machine you use as long as you bring the machine to class that you plan on using at home to FM with. She is a great instructor!

This guy is fun to watch!
The problem with that for me, is the fabric and stitching is obscured by a regular foot I do a lot of detailed FMQ and I have to see the lines very well and have complete control of the quilt sandwich. Also, the foot pressure can only be released so far. I tried it like that on the 319 and it was a no go. Of course, your mileage will vary with different machines.
He is!! I could see my daughter doing something like this since she is very good at drawing. I lack that talent! But then, practice does make for perfect...or so they say.
