I wonder the same thing. It isn't like they are easy to get off and therefore easily lost.

Almost every 27/28/127/128 I see is missing the front slide plate as well.

because that is the plate remove to access stuff it stays "loose" and will slide out given the chance.

Cathy taught me a trick of bending them slightly to make them tighter. I've even figured out how to bend it more at the end so it is loose until just seated.
