Can I buy your car scam
I had just gotten out of the shower, and was dressed only in a skimpy robe. I had just started to sit down to my computer and a cup of coffee when the doorbell rings. Oh great. I really didn't want to answer it dressed like that. But...I went to the door, four barking and howling dogs already there, opened it about 4 inches and peered around it. YES?
Do you want to sell your car? My car is a 1995 Olds Royale with handicap plates on it and a SUPPORT DOG ON BOARD sign on the rear end. Why would anyone want a 17 year old car, and why would they think I would want to sell? I told him no, shut the door, and looked out the window thru the drapes. He walked down my drive and got into a white pick-up. Hmmm.
Seems this pair has been doing the whole area, ringing bells, asking if they want to sell cars, vans, etc. They also seem to have taken bags of cans from one persons yard that were being gathered for the recycler scrap people. The police must have been called, since they went by twice yesterday that I know of. My neighbor told me to not answer the door anymore, because the police were warning about a pair working where one tried to get you out the front and the other came in the back.
As Mr. T always said....I pity the fool. Lol. I never answer the door without my little friend, the .38. I have been aware of the idiots who like to do home invasions for years. And now, I will be watching for this pair in their white pick up to drive by again....and get the licence number.
The neighbors around here don't really socialize much, but we do keep an eye out on each other's house, and anyone out of place gets looked over pretty closely. I have a suspicion that the police will be rounding this pair up soon.

These guys aren't wanting my car, and I would never sell it. I have been steadily replacing the whole thing a part at a time, lol. Soon it will be a completely new car. One of us will eventually get the license number, and the police can go ring their doorbell.

They were doing this up here about 3-4 months ago and hit 25 or so homes. One person gets you looking a something in the front and the other walks in and cleans out the jewelry, cash etc. Hit my GF's neighbor. 88 year old WW2 vet and his wife. Married a million years. Stole her wedding ring among a bunch of over stuff.
They eventually caught them but she never got back her ring.
I think somebody tried it at my house but my dog bites if I am home alone and a male approaches me.. I told them to back off my property or get bit.

That's the thing. It is a nice neighborhood on the edge of town. I (and my dog) know my neighbors, it is a culdesac with only 12 homes, and no reason in the world for two young unknown men to be knocking on my door except mischief. I am not "security" minded by any means but some things are just not right.
Do be careful. Most thefts up here were between 200-2500 in cash plus whatever they could nap in jewelry but they did 25 of them in about three weeks before the cops nailed them. They were a traveling band of thieves. The scam is buy a car, buy a boat or RV, help with car that died, etc.

Given where you live, I can understand the concern. In my area, the scam in the summer was to just walk into the house. People leave their door open while they are gardening, working in the yard, etc. We put in a combo lock on my parent's front door. That way it is always locked, yet immediate family members can enter.
Someone coming to ask if you want to sell an old car is not actually that unusual. My late Dad was approached I can't count how many times about selling his 64 T-bird. I was approached at least 3 times for a 93 Mercury Marquis. Very often, if the body is crap, they want a parts car OR want to part out a car (for a lot more money than they give you). That's fine - not a business I want to be in. My vehicles last a long time because of junk yard parts!
