I own a Bernina, though not a 440. They are fantastic machines, but only if they are what you're looking for. Definately sew with the BSR at the dealer before deciding if it's worth the money for you, since some people do hate it (I'm in the "I love it!" camp.) 5.5 hours is a very long distance to be from your dealer. Are you certain there aren't any closer? I really think that proximity to a good dealer is key with any expensive machine purchase. You'll rely on them not only for annual maintenance, but also for new owner's classes and help with any issues you experience while you learn the machine. You may want to address that with the dealer when you visit. One of my favourite things about my Bernina is having a great dealer nearby where I can pop in and ask questions and get help any time I want. It is the quietest, smoothest machine I have ever used (though I don't have nearly the range of experience as many people on this board.)

I don't have an inside scoop, I've just been a Bernina customer for years and they have a cycle they never seem to very from, LOL. The Aurora line should be next to be updated. If not this fall, then definitely by next spring. I'd stake my life on it!

The Bernina machines are true workhorses. They will do what they are advertised to do, and do it well.
I was not happy about having to change my bobbin tension from cotton to rayon to switch between sewing and embroidering, and did not want to spend the money for another bobbin,
so I had the fix-it man set my tensions for rayon, and I only use my 440EE for embroidery.
I have other machines for straight stitching.
