I took a quilting class a couple of years ago and the instructor used a flannel backed plastic tablecloth. She tacked it to the wall and the fabric stuck to the flannel just fine. You can buy those tablecloths pretty cheap.

I put two very small nails in the wall just a few inches below the ceiling line and put two buttonholes to match up to the nails in one of the vinyl tablecloths and used the back as a design wall. It was great because I could take it down when I didn't need it and could toss it in the wash occasionally.
