My favourite Janome 1/4" foot is actually one I got at Sears back when I sewed on a Kenmore (made by Janome). The guard is silver, and the foot fits tightly onto the holder thingy - no wobbles at all. I'm glad I kept it when I got a new machine. I'm not sure if you can get sewing machine stuff from Sears in the US any more, but it might be worth looking into. My Kenmore feet were also about half the price of the same feet with Janome packaging, so it was quite affordable.

I would say it depends on which Janome and which 1/4" foot you're asking about. I have the O2, Clearview, and Acufeed 1/4" feet for my 7700, and they're OK but I still have to move the needle quite a bit (prefer the clearview of the 3 unless I'm going over seams). For the Acufeed I actually have to move the needle to 6.1 to get 1/4" and then it's not quite as "scant" as I'd like it, but moving it any further to the right causes the thread to break.

I also have an Elna 760 (the same as the Janome 9900). I absolutely love it for piecing - it's 1/4" stitch with the 1/4" foot is exactly where I expect it to be without moving the needle and the feed is fantastic. I *think* that stitch and the awesome feed is the same on the Janome Skyline S5 and 15000 (maybe also on the 12000) as well. I really want to replace the 7700 with a machine that has the same piecing capability as the Elna but the larger throat of the 8900. Crossing fingers that Janome comes out with a larger harp version of the Skyline (don't need the embroidery capability of the 12000 or 15000).

Can you paint it with nail polish?

wow I've had a janome for years and I always used the edge of the regular foot. Are you telling me that's not 1/4"???

I have one for my Janome Jem. I like it and don't have to move the needle. I also like the Brother 1/4 inch foot with no guide. The feet fit both machines. Walmart here sells a few of the Brother Snap On feet, all about $8 or less.

I actually have two. One with the little black guide and one without (same foot just got the machine mechanic to take off the guide). I have found that lately, I use the one without the guide more. I think I was also pushing the fabric against the guide sometimes. And of course, you cannot use the one with the guide if you are sewing HST's.

You could use nail polish to change color .

Love the ¼" foot on my 8200 and I do change the needle position to the ¼".

Why not? I sew every seam with the guide on.

I do. I just make sure the fabric gets under it at the beginning of each seam. Once it's on the fabric, it sews just fine.
