my friend wants me to make a quilt out of her daughters old baby blankets. She had previously given them to someone else to do the same but what they did was just sew all the blankets together to make a large blanket. She wanted a "quilt". I dont have a lot of time to commit to making it, so i wanted to do something simple so i figured i could cut them into squares (6-10"s??) and make a pattern like "trip around the world" or something similar. I was thinking the easiest and quickest way to put it together would be to make a rag quilt. All the blankets are soft fleece types of fabric. If i make a rag quilt can i get away with just using the blanket pieces for the front and back and not use a middle layer? Should i do something else? Any help is appreciated :-)

Oh that is a great idea I would have never thought of doing that. I now wish I had saved my sons blankets!

If it's fleece, it won't "rag" when washed. Fleece doesn't fray. I think it would still look nice.

I wouldn't put batting between the top and back for this kind of quilt.

Before you do that, make sure she knows exactly what a rag quilt is. Some people don't like them.

I think the two layers would be fine.

My baby daughter is now 37. Many years ago (on an old Kenmore sewing machine) I took all her receiving blankets (had so many) and cut them into 9" squares and sewed them back together mixing up the different designs. I did not know a thing about quilting back then mind you. I used an old blanket for the batting and backed it with flannal fabric. I went over the blocks with a decrative stitch, which quilted it. She has the quilt to this day, but does not use it. It was made especially for her, and she treasurers it. I only used receiving (flannal) blankets. Hope this gives you an idea. Mary

I've made rag quilts out of fleece, it doesn't rag but it still looks really nice, I put 2 squares together, leave out the middle layer, sew the X to join the squares and sew together. Here's a sample of one I've done. I used a walking foot to sew the layers together because they were kind of fluffy bulky.

I have made a few rag quilts out of babt print flannel.
I wanted mine to be warm & thick.
I used 5 layers of different baby prints,cutting each into 5" blocks.
Depending on the size (width/lenght) you could had more blocks.
I alterneated the prints to make (5) sets,then sewed them into rows.
I would suggest to show the person your rag quilt idea prior.
One never knows...........

i may have mispoke. I am actually not sure what the materials are.(no kids of my own ). What are store bought baby blankets normally made of? I did show her a picture of the rag quilt and she thought they were nice so i think i am good to go with that method, but just to make sure i will show her again before i cut them up :-)
