I have a new Juki 2010Q and am trying to quilt SID.
The top stitch is fine but the backing, which is flannel is
puckering. I tried to adjust tension and nothing worked.
I then decided to try it on another fabric sandwich without
the flannel backing and it was fine. I then tried the exact
same thing on my Brother machine and the same thing
    happened.
Is it possible that a cheaper flannel, (got it at JoAnns)
    would do this?
I,m at my wits end here trying to get this done.
Can someone offer some input? Thanks.

Gosh, I have never had that problem with flannel on my dinky Brother machine. Could it be that it isn't basted smooth enough? Flannel is very stretchy. Or could you try something like the supreme slider, or vinyl over the sewing machine? I'll wait to see what our other quilters advise.

Have you tried lessening the presser foot pressure?

Thanks to all for your helpful answers.
I am using a walking foot and I just watched the video for
the pressure foot which needed a little adjustment, however
I forgot to mention that I was using monofilament thread.
I think this may have had a lot to do with the problem, because when I changed threads, there was a big difference
although still a little bit of pucker but not enough to worry about.
I will play with the pressure until I get it perfect.
Thank you all. I appreciate it.

Elaine did you find that the walking foot makes A LOT of noise? Clank clank clank. I'm stopping for now because I'm afraid to break it

The sound is normal, it's the nature of how a walking foot works.

My Juki walking foot works great but is very noisy---a clacketty sound.

You might try using some starch to stiffen the flannel up. I just finished quilting a flannel Chevron quilt using RK Cozy cotton flannel on front and back and had no problems.
