I TOO always use the Clover slim line chalk (wheel with powdered chalk) on dark colors. I TOO did get burned with their blue chalk, it does NOT come off!! Usually, on light fabric, I marked as I quilted with a purple be gone. Never had a problem, but they are only good for a VERY SHORT limited time !! If anyone uses any pencil, be SURE TO TEST IT on a scrap of the same fabric and MAKE SURE IT COMES OFF EASILY !!

I use frixion pens and washable magic markers on light, and chalkboard chalk or slivers of soap on dark. I starch my fabric, so I'm really marking on the starch. When washed all markings are gone along with the starch.

I have considered several different ways to mark. They mostly involve pens where you use some way to get rid of the lines when you are done stitching. I worry that in twenty years time, the chemicals in these pens may do something to the fabric, so I have decided to just stick with ordinary chalk. It comes off easily and it is cheap.

I have used the crayola washable markers for marking small lines and have never had a problem with them not washing out. I haven't used them for marking for FMQ. I still worry that that much marking will not wash out. I may try on a table cloth I plan to make for myself to see how well it works.

I use the Bohn Chalk pencil, but I found it at Hancock fabrics and I can't seem to find them as cheap online. here's what it looks like:

But I also like the Clover ones with the little wheel. White chalk for darker colors and yellow for light works great.
