Mixing Batiks with Regular Cotton fabrics?
#12
I also mix them, though I don't hand quilt. If you have hand quilted batik before and were satisfied, I would think you would be satisfied if you mixed batiks with regular quilter's cotton fabrics. I have read that some hand quilters find them more difficult to get a needle through. Or, if you haven't hand quilted them, you might experiment and see how it feels. As far as piecing the two in the same quilt, I have never had a problem doing that.

There is such a variety with batiks, and some can really shout. I've mixed them with traditional cottons but only when the batik is subtle and the colors are perfect. With GFG, though, since the fabrics are so individual, I'd bet a lot of them would work.

I've been wondering about this as well. I'm planning a DWR for my daughter and want it to be very neutral throughout. I started collecting batiks but soon realized I'd spend the next 100 years trying to get enough "neutral' batiks. So now I'll feel more confident using "regular" cottons. Thank you all. It's nice knowing other quilters have the same questions I do (and take the time to ask them) Joyce in Delaware

I mix batiks and regular cotton fabrics all the time in my quilts. I don't hand sew anything if I can avoid it.
The quilt in the photo has both types of fabrics.
