new to quilting, need machine advice
I have talked my husband into letting me buy a new machine. I currently use a Singer Merritt 2404-I got it free from a friend. So far it's really good for straight stitches but I really want to upgrade to a machine specifically good for quilting. I am new to this all so I need something user friendly. I have a modest budget of around $200. I have been looking at the Brother CS6000 and it seems to have everything I am looking for. I want a computerized model and was wondering what everyone else uses or can recommend for a beginner. Thanks in advance!

I used a similar machine for many years (still have it actually, use it when my embroidery is going on the other machine) and it has served me quite well. I was able to turn out several lovely quilts on it. For a starter machine with a small budget you could do worse. Brother machines are little workhorses.

Howdy and welcome, from Texas!
I just recently bought a Brother CS 6000i, to teach my DD and DGD to sew. So far, it seems to be a great machine, especially for the money! Was planning to give it to my DD, after teaching them to sew on it (I have an old Kenmore and a fairly new Janome) but may re-think that!

If you are new to quilting then I would work with the machine that you have. All you really need is a straight stitch and some tape to measure your l/4 seam. After you have gotten into it and decide that you really like quilting, the Brothers would be a good machine.

Thanks for the responses! I decided to go to Joanne fabrics and take a look at some of their machines. After playing with a few, I decided on a Singer Confidence 7469Q. It was a little more than I wanted to spend but I was able to put it on layaway. It seems to have everything I need and it appears to be quite user friendly!

I had a $99 Walmart Special (Brother something) for about 10 years. Just basic zigzag and straight. Was still running well when I sold it. Now I have a $88 Walmart Special (Brother something) with 25 stitches that I like to use for applique but I mostly use the zigzag and straight stitch.

Kenmores made by Janome are also good machines and lower in cost. That's what I got a few yrs ago when I started back into sewing/quilting. I now have a larger machine but this still gets used a lot. I don't know where you are from but here Hancock Fabrics has a nice Janome on sale for 199 with lots of stitches and if you are 55 or over its senior citizen day the first and 3rd Wedn of the month so the discount will be on top of the sale price. I'm headed there after I get off work to get some fabric and scissors. The 2nd Wed is Military discount day so for the 1st 3 Wed of the month I'm covered. Good luck
