I ran into that problem today. I need enough black for one 2" by 8.5" strip. The only fabric store I have available only had one black and it's far from a match. I did purchase a small amount and will have to decide whether to use it or piece the little strip lengthwise. I had enough fabric, but cutting from a sitting position (wheelchair) I made several miscuts.

Just wondering if there is a way to fudge. For instance use the blocks that you have finished for the center then add medallion type rows around that center using the other fabric. That way the difference would be separate and look planned. Just a thought.

Standing right next to you on this one!!! Seems like for the last 4-5 years, all the greens have been shades of olive! It's been very difficult finding true greens in the forest and kelly families.

Bless your heart! (Can you tell I am from the South???!!!) I, too, have had this happen and agree that it's so frustrating. You have come up with a great solution, though. Give yourself a pat on the back and have a piece of chocolate!

Even the Red Heart yarn that is "supposed" to have no dye lots - DOES!
I have also learned that lesson. I have also learned to bring a swatch with me while shopping. I wonder if it would have helped (for next time) to send a color swatch to the place one is ordering from.
Yikes I hope this doesn't happen to me, I ran out of back ground fabric & ordered 2 yards of it from 2 different online shops. The fabric has came it finally but haven't had a chance to make sure they both match what I already used. Thanks for pointing this out before I start cutting & wasting fabric that doesn't match.
I have even had Kona cottons not match - when the name of the color is the same - but the look of the color is different!
I agree that the "solution" is to scatter the two colors more or less evenly though a piece, and then it looks more or less planned - instead of the "oops" look.

I started a quilt, ran out of fabric that I was using as a background fabric, no longer available in stores, and put it aside for 11 years. One day I saw it again in the stores and bought it not noticing that there was a slight change in dye lot. After I got the blocks together and was arranging them on the carpet, I noticed that some were darker than the others. At first I was upset, but then I scattered them around and finished the quilt. Having that variation in color actually added to the quilt. Instead of having a flat looking background, it added life to it. Finally had to through that quilt out, it got so threadbare and so many holes that it was no longer repairable.

I had similar die lot issues too in December. The Kona cotton I used to match to my daughter's school uniform (she can't wear polyester, so I make her dresses to match) is a dark purple shade now and not a dark blue. Couldn't go with that one! I had to switch to another brand of fabric to get close the the colour, but we don't like the hand of it as well as we did the Kona cotton.

I just had this come up in some cream (Kona calls it eggshell) fabric. I ordered enough for my project and it came in 3 pieces. (Which I approved before it was sent to me, as I didn't think about dye lot. Shame on me) but I will be able to scatter it throughout, as it is background fabric. It is a pain, though and I understand what you're going through.
