The only thing that works for me no matter what color, and I can see, is also the purple disappearing marker. I mark what I have time to quilt and it fades within the day, unless it's humid. No washing required. I've heard if you apply heat it will set but haven't proofed that yet.

With stencils I use a pounce. Marking lines I use a #2 mechanical pencil and if needed a Bohin white lead for dark fabrics. One of my favorites is a little chalk filled rolling marker. I just use a soft eraser to get rid of the pencil lines and a white terry towel to rub off the chalk marks. I do not wash my quilts after I finish them, as all the fabrics are washed before. I do hand quilt, so I mark a little, then quilt a little, then erase or dust off the chalk, so none of the marks stay on the fabric very long.

[QUOTE=bearisgray;6323997]I am still wary about anything that is a liquid or is runny for marking - anything that says "pen" in the title .

Yep, me too....I use chalk or soap slivers...even a little wary of pencils...just a big chicken in the marking department.

Washable markers. Have never had an issue with them.

I have tried every kind of marker found in a fabric store. I haven't found one that I like yet. Some are better than others, but I'm beginning to think that my expectations are unreasonable. Some are hard to get out and others come out before you want them to.I did like the marking pens, but they seemed to dry out quickly. I have been quilting free hand or using a pentagram. I think it is hopeless in my case.

I use the washable Crayola markers, but that requires washing afterwards. Since I always wash my quilts its not an issue for me. There was a time that I used this spray chalk with stencils. It was called Magic Marking spray. I bought this at the Quilting Creations website. http://www.quiltingcreations.com/sto...=spray+marking It worked pretty good, as long as you didn't spray too heavy.. if you sprayed heavy it would cake up on the quilt top. But you could scrape it off and it washed out just fine.

I am so afraid of markings on my fabric that I've only so far marked on Golden Threads paper and quilted over that.

Have you ever considered that when using the disappearing ink marker that even tho the color disappears there is chemical still in the fabric.

I had these leave a residue color behind. Go Jo or similar product seems to remove some colors,, but I don't use them on white anymore.

I use Frixion pen by Pilot. We can get it from the local supermarket in several different colours. You can rub it of with the rubber on the end of the pen or iron it of. So far all ok. The only thing I don't recommend is don't use it with starch. It leaves a faint white line if you do. Cheers :}
