Rachel, i D'Marief I see a fabric I really like, I usually buy 3yds.That way, I have enough to put in a quilt and some left over for my stash. This method has worked out fine for me. If it's a real pretty fabric, I know right off,I'll come up with other things for it.Some times just small throw pillows to go on the bed, with the quilt I made. D'Marie

I've been told it's because most stores want to order something NEW, so that their customers always have something new to look at.

I work part time in LQS. I see it happen all of the time....customers come in and buy either exactly what the pattern they want to make calls for and then they make a mistake or they didn't have enough and they come in and it is gone.....we always tell them to try on-line.....if it is fairly new this works..if not they have to substitute.....hard thing. I will see a line of fabric that I like and I will decide to wait to buy it and the next time I come to work it will be gone....drives me crazy!
So actually if there is a peice that I LOVE...I will buy 5 yards....because I feel safe with5 yard cuts.....if worse comes to worse....I can always use it for a backing... usually make pretty big quilts. I have also been known to buy a whole bolt of fabric if I thought I would use t specifically for backing.

I may not be understanding all this right but here goes my question. When a person buys 3yds or 5yds does this mean of the different prints for that line? So how does a person divide it up on how much to buy of each line? Hope this makes sense to someone!!

Not sure if this question was meant to be taken as a joke or taken seriously -
If as a joke -
1) to help keep the economy going
2) to satisfy some "need"
If meant seriously - a lot of fabrics seem to have "short runs" - meaning that after whatever the manufacturer printed is sold out, then there will be no more available. If I think something is "gotta have it" - it is highly likely that someone else is also thinking that.
As far as buying coordinating fabrics - how much of each? - probably get the most of the focus fabric - one can sometimes "make do" for some of the coordinating fabrics.

I have learned the hard way if you like it, if you have the money, then get as much of it as you can right away. I put off buying and then found it was popular and sold out. My biggest problem when I do buy a line I like is getting enough and trying to decide on the spot if I am going to make a quilt should I get enough for backing as well? Of course that begs the question of what size quilt will it be and I know most times I don't have the answers so I just do the best I can and purchase all I can afford at the moment. I like Connecting Threads cause I can usually get a kit for a quilt or whatever, then they tell me how much backing is needed. Problem solved.
