I too would be curious as to what pattern you are using. I didn't know that Debbie Maddy hada Hunters star pattern. Will have to check that out I have made several of her other patterns and loved them.

Tell the instructor that is what you had in your stash. There are videos by Jan Krentz on You Tube and she doesn't use the Rapid Fire Ruler. And she has not "Y" seams to worry about. It's all strip piecing. You can go to Deb Tucker's video on the ruler and watch closely. You can back up and proceed on the You Tube. I didn't want to spend the money when I can buy more fabric or a template that would be hard to duplicate. I use my Fiskar or any ruler that has the degrees on it to make just about any pattern. I also use my compasses and protractors to make some of my angles. I hated algebra but who knew we'd use them for quilting. I would definitely go to the class though. Have fun!

The quilt on the wall was scrappy red and white. The owner made one block and pinned it next to the quilt - it was grey and white. My problem. I need 5 7/8 yards of two colors for this quilt. I have that much in Kona black, Kona white, Kona Grey and some really pretty red.

I thought at first I would use my pretty red and white, but I realize that is the colors of the quilt on the wall. I don't want to look like I'm copying her. Same with the grey and white - just like the block on the wall. I bought a purse yesterday and feel I should use what I have at home instead of ordering online, bt then I think I will be copying the one on the wall, even though it's scrappy red.

Am I being paranoid or should I just go for the red and white. I could order some Kona blue online instead, but the color is never the same as the picture. And I have all this pretty red waiting to be used. Any ideas?

I would definitely ask for a discount then, no matter the cost of the class, especially if the owner of the shop is the instructor. The sewing center I frequent has classes. Depending on who is teaching the class; owner states you can use your stash; outside instructor> you get a discount but have to use shop fabrics.

And do you have to pay for the class? If so that is a lot of gall on their part, pay for class and material. I guess one way to make more money. If class is free that is different.

I am sure the owner of the original quilt on the wall will be happy you liked her so well you wanted to make one just like it.

To copy something someone has done is the greatest form of flattery!

I'd make what I liked and wouldn't worry what anyone else thought. She's not the first to com up with the brilliant idea to use red and white in a 2 color quilt! I haven't taken a quilt class in a long time but then and even from what I see now in classes people often want identical fabrics to the teacher's sample...some are totally crushed and lost when the shop says they're out of the fabric...same as seeing a pattern or pattern in a book! some just can't see another combination..and others can see another but like the one they're already seeing better.

wish I could take the class with you!

I'm doing a Delphi quilt at present with monthly classes. The original quilt in shades of blue as mine will be. Others in the group have a mixture of colours . Delphi means blue and white crockery to me so I'm doing blue and white. I am not copying just doing my own quilt in colours I want for my house.

You'll be using different fabrics, don't worry about copying her. Bonnie Hunter's mysteries always have color palettes and if you stick with it fine, if not go for it. Make yourself happy.
