I would be a little concerned about having a sleeve on a baby quilt that they sleep or play with, for the same reason Cindi mentioned. I can see a little toe getting caught in it and simulataneously pulled on by the baby or someone else. I'm also wondering, after the baby drags it around, loves on it, and perhaps stains it in the course of using it well, would it be displayed on a wall later? I don't know. Just thinking of the possibilities, not trying to be negative, just very pragmatic.

Thank you so much for your replies. I'm going to put the sleeve on (in same fabric as back) and I will baste the ends closed. Would not have thought about closing the ends - great idea.

Once, I either made a hanging sleeve for a baby quilt I gave, and told he new mom how to attach it, or put it on myself and explained that it was there in case they preferred to hang it. (I forget which I did.) I included the hanging sleeve because they live out of state, I wouldn't be seeing them again for years, and the parents aren't quilters.

Before you all go away.... Is it possible to install a removable hanging sleeve for a quilt? The only sleeves I have done were for oriental rugs and THAT is another story altogether! If there is a way to make the sleeve removable, I would love to know. There is a rumor I might need to know in the future.

Thanks for this thread and sharing your knowledge and experience.

I put a hanging sleeve on ever quilt I make, whether it is to be hung or not. Large, medium, and small. I also put a small sleeve on the bottom of each one , to hold a lathing strip for a little weight, it also helps to hold the quilt flat.

Definitely put the sleeve on. That gives them the option to use as a blanket or a decorative hanging.

It is an option, which ever way they want to use the quilt. Tacky? NO, just another option.

I would put it on with a note saying it's an option for use.

Thank you, dear QB Friends. The decision was taken out of my hands when DH slipped on the ice, and I became
Nurse Jane FuzzyWuzzy. Didn't have time to sew on the sleeve. My nephew & his wife loved the quilt and said that they were going to hang it in the Baby's room, not to worry, they would figure out a way! And so life goes.........

I'm so sorry about your husband's slip on the ice! But so glad your nephew and his wife loved the quilt! And glad you finished it before the injury
