this is blending into each other because the scale of the pattern on both fabrics are the same even though the background fabric is a different color.

you can use pattern next to pattern but then one of the fabrics should have a much smaller scale print so the eye can distinguish between the 2.

This looks like a starfish to me. I like it. It is busy but very pleasant. Good job

Yes, a solid black would make the other part of the design pop. Even if you used solid black for the "arms" and stuck with the bubbles in the center it would make a difference.

Testing fabrics together is a great way to learn design elements!

Thats why I made one to see how it looked. Something just dosen't look good about it . I wonder if a plain black would look better for the star. I posted my fabrics on the black and white exchange topic.. I put black just in the center but I am confused. Now I feel like I should just back out now.

Oh no!!! Don't back out. Just try again and use plain black for the star. I think that would be great. We have all made a block and stepped back and realized it wasn't what we thought it would be. It's just one block. Try again. I'm sure the next one will be great.

I am making 4 graduation quilts using the friendship star-it is one of my favorities. My backgrounds are all white on white and the stars are different colors. This way the star pops out of the block. I would use white for the background and the darker black/white fabric for the stars.

don't back out now - this is how you learn.

we all make design decision and some we like and others we don't - this will continue thru your entire quilting career.

when i make a new quilt i'll make 2. one i use to learn on and work all the bugs out of the pattern and then the 2nd quilt is the nice quilt. i've been doing it this way since my 1st day of quilting.

you could either choose a very small scale print for the background or use a solid color.

you did a great job and this is really the best time to learn - you have an entire forum willing to help you.

no one is expectingt a "quilt show" block out of this swap - this is just fun and a way for us to share our work with our friends.

Thanks I think I will make one with black background and maybe one with white background. Thanks again for the encouragement. My daughter said mom you are way to hard on yourself You told the group you were not experienced and I learned that she took a quilting class for fun in college she is a math and computer technology major. You learn something everyday,  I was amazed to learn this about her I said well girl we must get together and you teach your mom some tricks. She said if it is math give it to me if it is sewing you get it. Gotta love those kids.

how lucky to have another person who can quilt in the house.

i don't really have anyone local to help. DH can help with color and if he thinks it looks nice but that's it.

i just spent the night ripping out seams of a quilt i'm working on because it wasn't lining up correctly.

i ripped out 3 days worth of work and i have to go back to the beginning.
