Thanks for all of your encouragement the other night! I have the quilt, batting and backing spray-basted---thanks for that tip!! I have tried tying and I've given that up...the quilt is just too darn thick at the seams to wrestle the needle in and especially out of!! I mean I worked up a sweat. Ugh. I'm disappointed.

So, back to quilting it with my basic little machine. Wavy lines were suggested using a walking foot, but I don't have one. Any ideas? I have the basic feet that came with my machine and a quilting foot. I'm worried I'm going to mess this up. :(

    Here's what I'm working with.

Is there any way you could get a walking foot? If it is very thick, then I am afraid without it, the layers will shift.

Why not tie it in the center of the blocks?

All I've done is SID or outline/echo but I don't see either of those as being your best choice. I'm thinking you can do the wavy lines with just your regular foot. Maybe try it on a sample and see how it works...

I don't usually use my walking foot on smaller quilts. I stitch in the ditch. I Start from the center and work my way out. Go back to the center and go a different direction. This has worked well for my for the Quilt For Kids quilts. Also if you want to tie it don't put the ties in the seams. But in an area that has less thickness. Hope this info helps.

If you haven't already had this tip, you can use a curved "dollmaking" or "upholstery" needle to aid in getting the thread or yarn through the layers and back up to the top of the quilt sandwich.

I agree with nursie76...you may get even more frustrated than when tying if you don't have a walking foot (the voice of experience here!). You mention you have a quilting foot, I am guessing it is the darning foot attachment, where you drop the feed dogs and use it to Free Motion Quilt. FMQ may be your best option...

Can you "tie" using your machine? I did this once using a small diamond motif stitch, but it could be done with a small eyelet or buttonhole stitch. I just stiched where I would have tied. Worked out great.

When you were tying it did you use a hoop to pull the quilt tight. I tied 3 Jean quilts using a hoop on a stand. It was much easier to do than just holding the quilt in my lap. It was easier to get the needle thru.
