I had the Olde English in my hand at the store today. I wasn't sure about whether to go with the light or dark. I think dark will cover more blemishes, but it a moot point for now. We are starting a 12 inch snowfall. I'll be grounded tomorrow.

Billy, this is the SS # NHR 114370. I did find out that New Home started using a number in front of the serial number in 1930. I think Janome bought New Home out in the 60's? That means my machine has to be sometime in between!

I haven't had time to take pictures -- busy all day with horses and Christmas decorations!

Mine is a flat tension, vibrating shuttle, Series A and I was lucky enough to find the manual on Needlebar.
There is a picture of mine on page 466 of this shop.

Wow Judy, my New Home is much newer than yours. What a beautiful machine and cabinet! My machine had a motor, now missing, and had to be made after 1930 because of the serial number preceded by letters.

Your machine is much prettier, but I like mine too!

Trish that is a really neat cabinet. I have never seen one - in person - like that. When I got my Rocketeer, 501A, it was in a cabinet that had the little feet like that. During that era everything had those feet -- dinning room tables, end tables, seems like everything did!

Really, that just goes to show we can't believe everything we read! I read that New Home didn't put letters in front of the serial numbers until 1930. Now, I am even more interested in the year of my machine. I will have to call that number on Monay and find out what year mine was made, although, I know it is not anywhere near the age of yours.

It seems like a lot of the serial numbers for the various machines are lots of guesswork as far as when some of them were made.

1. Open the case up, remove the machine and give it a good wipe down with a disinfectant like lysol spray. Dry it out and let it sit for a few days before returning machine. I have probably owned over a hundred featherweights over the years (I sell them)and about half of them had to be de-odorized. :)

Why only safeguard? My featherweight case came with a bar of lever 2000 inside and I'm assuming they've kept it in there for years. It's in a ziploc that is not zipped. I like the lever 2000 because it's what dh uses and I'm used to the smell (I'm very sensitive to perfumy smells)

The Safeguard seems to combat the odor better, and the box is left open so that the "fragrance" of the safeguard can permeate the case. Havent tried Lever, but maybe other anti bacterial sops would work. :)
