Ya know, I realized that IF there was a real (3:1) hand crank for the featherweight, I might be tempted to try one out for awhile...
I've actually seen a featherweight handcrank! Well, a picture of one. For the life of me I can't remember where or when, I think it must have been on one of the Yahoo groups or a blog.

LOL, that won't happen. I think having it is enough for now. As for the hand cranks I fail to see the facination people have for those. I have one and rarely use it. It sews great, I put a lot of hours refurbishing a rusted up machine to working condition, but eventually I'll motorize it.
So I'd never even consider a FW HC.

The 401a is a 100 percent mechanical animal. It needs to be clean, oiled and greased. And the big fiber drive wheel needs grease too. Then the motor top bearing might be suffering from solidified grease and that will cause a whine. A couple drops of 30 wt oil on top of the bearing will help with that.

Anyway, once I figured that out I started to like the machine. But I only use it for zig zag.
My 401 is probably the one I would dump first. It just doesn't sew on anything thicker than 2 pieces of fabric. Skips stitches.
