Penny Haren's "Pieced Applique "... 1 block a week begins January 2011

Love the stars Jupiter! That is so funny that you used traditional piecing for the larger star. That was part of my annoyance with this block - I kept telling myself that I could do that star more easily and more accurately with flying geese or HSTs!
The thread painting you did is beautiful, but I especially love the colors in your little block. Great job!

That's funny that you thought the same thing while working on the 6" block, that I thought about the 12" block.
I am very comfortable with applique. Not so comfortable with traditional piecing... so appliquing the little triangles in the 6" block was very logical for me. If I'd had to make those tiny flying geese by tradition methods, I would have flunked out of goose school!
And so we learn..... thats what its all about!

Happy Sunday everyone! Here is my "Prosperity" block, which I enjoyed doing 100 times more than the last block! I found this to be the first block where the size of the applique pieces really mattered. I had to cut my templates just on the inside of the lines to make everything fit like it should.

Wow, you are bright and early. I was just checking my emails before I went to bed (its 11.15 Sunday night). I have been sitting up sewing a baby quilt for my expected GB.
Your block is great Lara and I went green with my block also. I have to agree that this one was more enjoyable than the last.

That's lovely Irene - love that blue stripe.
Jupiter was right, the light coloured blanket stitch gives a lacey look to the blue edges.
Doesn't the different colour placement give a different emphasis within each of our blocks. That makes it very interesting to see everyones blocks each week.

I haven't even got mine started yet. I am glad to hear that this one is easier and more forgiving than last week. You are all very quick... and such beautiful yet different looks. The lights and darks in different positions really changes the look. I love them all!
I've spent all of yesterday working on our quilt guild newsletter. I am the editor. I hope to get it finished this afternoon and mailed out. Then I can go play inthe studio!

Here are my Prosperity blocks. Not my fav to do, but they came out ok.
If you look at the 12" block, it looks like the yellow squares didn't hit the seam lines right. Actually they are right on the line...but... the last stripe in the blue stripe fabric is dark blue. It matches up with the more solid dark blue, so your eye reads it as a miss. I don't hate it enough to do it over again, but maybe I'll remember that for next time.
I love the depth that I see in the larger block. I took a cue from DeeCee's Prosperity block, putting stripes and darks where she did. I like that. I first tried that on my smaller block, but got the darks and lights reversed, so it didn't get that look.
