New Quilting Bee May, 2017

Happy May Day everyone. The sun is finally out after a very wet, wet weekend. Thought we were gonna float away. It looks so clear out now.

I'm glad to see so many making their blocks. Here's a couple I hope you enjoy. Retiredteacher09 picked the Evening Star, and I picked the Duck & Ducklings. Please scroll down on each to find the instructions for the 10" block.

The one rule is that when you have made your block, you must post a picture(s) in order to be in the next month. The blocks will be 10” finished.

We welcome new participants. Just send me a PM or post on the New Bee for the month and I will make note that you would like to join. I hope that everyone who wishes to join, stays with us for the year. Even if you have to play catch-up, one block is all it takes to stay in. Have fun...

Having a time of printing off the patterns without printing a lot of pages.

Ann, I copy and paste into Word, and 'clean' all the extra stuff out. Makes it easier for me. If you can, you might try that.. Here's my Evening Star block.. onto the next one now.

Thanks OK, I will give it a try and see what happens. Love the blocks so far.

retiredteacher09 05-01-2017 11:00 AM

Oksewnsew: I love the embroidered butterfly! I thought of embroidering something in the middle but I still need more practice since I just got my embroidery machine last month.

AnngelAnne: I sometimes take a picture with my phone/IPad of the directions I need/want or bookmark the page. I am not copying the patterns on paper.

Off to work on the second block on this gloomy, wet day.

Ducks and Ducklings and 8 that I am putting together for a baby boy's quilt.

I thought my piece of scrap fabric would be big enough for the whole block but I didn't think it through clearly and didn't have enough for the 2.5" by 4.5" strips. Oh well. I still like it.

Wow Connie all of your blocks look great together!

I am finished with one of the blocks. We will be traveling soon back to Wisconsin and I want to get the blocks finished before we leave. Tomorrow I hope to start on the second block for this month.

Cheesehead: Nice block! Have a safe trip back to WI and thanks for the compliment on my blocks. I have been trying to coordinate them as I go along and use as many of the donated batik scraps as possible but many of the scraps are getting too small to use for these blocks so I'm looking through other scraps to supplement. Sometimes it takes longer to find the fabric I want to use than to sew the block. Lol!

Ah Connie I agree. And then when you think you have found it, put the block together and then put it with the others that are done so far, it seems not to fit sometimes, lol. Yours looks good. Love the purples, Cheesehead. Need to do more with that color myself, expand my comfort zone. Okay, do a better job of picking colors, either way, I'm having fun.

Just finished my second block for this month. Now I can pack away this fabric for the journey back to Wisconsin.

I really like how this block showcases the hydranga fabric. Thinking that it will be used in the center of the quilt with some additions made around it to form a medallion.

Oksewnsew 05-02-2017 07:32 AM

Great job, Cheesehead. I love that Hydranga piece. I just finished my Duck block, will post later. Have a safe trip back to Wisconsin. ;o)

I recently found a website called printfriendly.com. Go to the website you want to copy and copy the address And then paste on the printfriendly.com website. It will copy without all the added garbage then you can make it into a PDF file Or print it. I have fun on this very very helpful

retiredteacher09 05-03-2017 04:37 PM

Luvrazz: Thanks for the website. I know people will find it useful.

Fun choices! I'm sewing diagonal rows at the moment. I'm hoping to finish that up in the next couple days. Then I can work on a couple blocks! I like the idea of embroidery in the center of the Evening Star. I might jazz it up a bit too. These are really starting to look great as collections!

retiredteacher09 05-06-2017 06:00 PM

DianeR: I really like your block! The faint blue butterflies add depth to the fabric.

Thanks Connie, the butterfly fabric is in all my blocks as the feature fabric.

Hi all,
I just got back from vacation . I wen to Myrtle Beach had a fantastic time I held some baby tigers and chimps. That was the best. Going to give these blocks try as soon as I catch up on laundry... Hope you are all doing well

Oksewnsew 05-07-2017 02:11 PM

Glad you got to enjoy your trip. Anxious to see your blocks when you're finished.

Tomara, haven't seen you post lately, have you left us? Might give us a holler.

Worked on my blocks today! I needed a good 'rest' day, this helped me feel better! :) There isn't much left from my pack of fat-eights. I'm not sure how many more blocks I'm going to be able to get. I'm sure I can get 1, but I'm not sure if I can get another 4. I've been toying around with layouts to make with the blocks I do have....

I put a little extra something in the Star. Seemed to go with my fabric!

Have a great day all

Oksewnsew 05-09-2017 05:46 AM

Nice blocks Kristi. All the blocks are lookin' good. Just an FYI I'm going to throw out - Quiltmaker123, (Marlene) has had heart surgery (since Friday) and hope all went well. She said she'd be slow getting caught up, but wants to stay in the Bee. We all wish her the best and for a fast recovery. She's been in my 'old' Bee for a long time. Prayers going up for her.<3
