Thanks Macybaby & Judith... I think if I would have attempted scrappy instead of a controlled colorway, I would have given up on this project. Lol!

I'm a fabric lover, as well, and typically buy several yards at a time of fabrics that appeal to me. I've had other quilter's share with me to buy only when you have the pattern you'll be making but I can't do that. I'm easily distracted when I enter a LQS and I don't always buy when on sale. I try to be a frugal shopper but I'm not always successful. I joined the fabric moratorium challenge and have done well so far but the SBS has kept be distracted for 2 months....and I'm headed to Idaho for a month where they have a couple of my favorite quilt shops....no telling what I might come home with.

Yellow is my favorite color and polka dots....one of my shops here has an unbelievable collection of polka dots and stripes in bright colors. I think I have a yard of every bolt she had and some several yards of favorite colors. That is my next project after SBS and a QAV. Can't wait to get my fingers in all that polka dot. I have a summertime quilt to do too but I need to think about that for awhile.

Anael 04-07-2018 10:05 AM

Most of the time I buy only half yards as I purchase 99% of my fabrics in the USA. Even with shipping it's cheaper to do it this way. But......only flat rate enveloppe because when it comes in a box I have to pay taxes and duties and that makes it very expensive.
I love purple, blue, red and yellow. I love green to go with purple but not green alone.....does that make any sense? I love bright colours, I don't like brown!

DonnaPea 04-07-2018 10:14 AM

Teen - the word that comes to mind when I look at your laid-out Sylvia is "soothing". The combination of the teals & yellow is so appealing, and the little dab of black here and there keeps it interesting. Enjoy that pedicure - you have earned it!

Looking forward to seeing NZquilter join us. NZ Quilter, it's really fun, and so far I've only had my eyes crossed by 2 blocks (Robbing Peter to Pay Paul and New Mexico). I have a start on them but have set them aside for a day I really feel extra ambitious. Everything else has been just enough of a challenge to keep me motivated by all that I am learning (so far!)

Will have at least 2 to post on Monday, hopefully more. This is a fun group to be part of and I too appreciate everyone's encouragement & enthusiasm.

Anael 04-07-2018 10:27 AM

There were a few more blocks I thought were quite hard........

Looking forward to seeing your blocks DonnaPea! It's always a surprise what colours you used :)

Teen 04-07-2018 02:25 PM

Donna....thank you for the kind comments. So glad I'm finished with blocks. As you know, I hated New Mexico. It is in the quilt top but I haven't joined that row yet so I may still end up replacing it. As far as Robbing Peter, I ended up gluing my curves down before I sewed them. When gluing, the pieces naturally curl up like a U so gluing the 2 pieces together was a snap. I got one pucker but was able to clip a few stitches, smooth it out, and resew that little area. Worked great. My block isn't perfect but it's together and 6 1/2" so I was not going to try to improve it. There are others that were a pain the rear but I've blocked the trauma. Lol!

i have sewed blocks in A-F but haven't joined the rows yet. I need to audition cornerstones. I'm now thinking of doing yellow so I'm happily sashing the squares together, which are going together nicely...thank goodness.

Oh, Teen, it is stunning! Way to go! I love the colors, and your blocks throughout were just fabulous. Good job!!!

TheMerkleFamily 04-08-2018 05:36 AM

Teen, I've enjoyed watching your beautiful blocks come together and W.O.W. do they look gorgeous arranged together! Your precision is amazing and I'm sure the final reveal will be just stunning! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work.

Christine

Teen 04-08-2018 08:14 AM

Thank you, laurafet......I hope you've been able to find the time to work on your blocks. I know how much you are missing your craft.

Christine.....thank you...such a sweet comment. I'm eager to see it all together too and look forward to sharing. I'm sashing away right now....phew!

DonnaPea 04-08-2018 10:12 AM

Teen - thanks for the tip about Robbing Peter. I will try that for sure. Yellow sounds like a lovely cornerstone color. I am sure whatever you select will be beautiful.

Ok brides & future brides... I can't decide so I need your artistic eyes, please.

With or without cornerstones?....which color?

Anael 04-08-2018 02:45 PM

I would use cornerstones, just because I love it and it's easier to line up the rows ;)
I would go with the yellow because oh well I just love yellow........gives a spring feeling and doesn't distract from the blocks.

TheMerkleFamily 04-08-2018 03:22 PM

I like all three options - white is crisp & clean and the blue/yellow cornerstones give a very nice finished look. My 1st quick glance favored the blue cornerstones but you can't go wrong with any of the three choices!

I agree, no matter what you choose, you can'tr go wrong with this quilt. If it were mine, I would go with the yellow cornerstones. The teal cornerstones just get a little lost with all the other teal that is going on, but the yellow stands out nicely. Yellow just adds to the calming effect of this entire quilt, in my opinion.

Finished 3 over the weekend. Spent a lot of time messing around with Robbing Peter, will circle back around to it later with Teen's good suggestion.

I like it with the cornerstones in blue. Without seems too busy and the yellow just doesn't feel right. (And, I love yellow.) The blue just seems to be perfect to me.

Whatever you decide, it is going to be beautiful.

Judith1005 04-09-2018 05:21 AM

DonnaPea, three beautiful blocks. But, I was drawn to the colors in your first one. You are going to have a very interesting scrappy quilt. Is your background fabric white on white or light beige on light beige? Because I think the latter is what is coming across on my computer.

Anael 04-09-2018 05:31 AM

Wow DonnaPea, more beautiful blocks! These aren't easy...........well done!!

Blue Bell 04-09-2018 06:27 AM

DonnaPea, You have beautiful fabrics and they will make an awesome quilt.

It's a creamy beige tone on tone. Thanks for your encouraging words!

Teen 04-09-2018 07:26 AM

Great blocks, Donna. More beautiful fabrics. How many blocks have you completed? I'm eager to see a group picture with all your fabrics.

Thank you all for your suggestions.. I am leaning towards the blue but I still like the yellow. Besides the applique border, I have an idea for inner borders and the yellow cornerstone would work better for that....I'm going to think about it today as I run some errands.

giquilt 04-09-2018 10:35 AM

DonnaPea love your blocks!

Teen I like the yellow cornerstones. It makes your blocks pop. Congrats on getting all the blocks done.

Hope me I can put mind up soon. Gi

laurafet 04-09-2018 01:48 PM

Tough call. I like both. If uo go with them, I like the blue better than yellow. IMHO.

laurafet 04-09-2018 01:51 PM

They are beautiful, Donna.

I think I am at 41 or 42. I have an Excel spreadsheet I'm keeping just to keep my colors straight - don't want the same color blocks touching each other. I will have to figure out how to add it here.

DonnaPea 04-10-2018 06:54 AM

Didn't like the way that attachment came out

Let's try this, with the spreadsheet in landscape mode...

Teen 04-10-2018 07:45 AM

That's going to be fantastic, Donna. Rich colors...

Blue Bell 04-10-2018 07:55 AM

DonnaPea, You are well on your way! I can see that a spread sheet is very helpful. Looking good.

thimblebug6000 04-10-2018 08:19 AM

Teen, I'm voting for the yellow...

Ladies, I am so enjoying all your postings, there were a few blocks that I didn't enjoy making either, but once put into a quilt, everything seems to work itself out.

Judith1005 04-10-2018 10:21 AM

Donna, that's an awesome way to keep track of your blocks. They are looking wonderful!!

Anael 04-10-2018 10:51 AM

That's going to be a wonderful quilt DonnaPea!!!!

Teen 04-11-2018 09:32 AM

Just checking in....I nearly have the blocks assembled. I should be done today....then....onto the borders. I have my applique pieces ready to take with me on my trip so they should be ready for the quilt upon my return. My goal is to have this to the LA by end of May. I'm going to shop for my reproduction fabric for my Baltimore Album quilt while gone so, hopefully, that project will be ready to start in June and provide craft activity while I finish packing and sell my house. Fingers crossed!!

Anael 04-11-2018 10:19 AM

Fast as lightning Teen!!!! You can come over here and help me with my UFO's/WIP's :D :D :D I have quite a few of those!

All assembled......I sewed the first 2 rows with yellow corner stones and changed my mind...ripped out....and did blue, instead, which was my original design 140 blocks ago. Lol! My DH helped with sewing the 2 half together and pressing by holding the bulk for me.....sucker is heavy.... He's helped me on my bigger quilts. Such a trooper. Just need border sashing, inner borders, and applique outer border.....yea!!!

Anael 04-11-2018 02:33 PM

Stunning Teen!!!!!!!!!!!! There's nothing else I can say.

Judith1005 04-11-2018 02:50 PM

Oh Teen, it is gorgeous. I just love your controlled scrappy. It's so different then the other ones I've seen. But, still a masterpiece. I can't wait to see it again after your final borders. You are so lucky that your DH will help you like that. He's a keeper for sure!!

Seeing your quilt makes me rethink this not being my type of quilt. Will have to give it some more thought. I do like it with the scrappy cheerful blocks. I think you added just the right amount of yellow to your blocks. If I do try this quilt out at some point, it would have to be scrappy as I don't want to buy specialty fabrics. I want to use what I have at home. I have a drawer full of blues I could use......will have to give it more thought.....

laurafet 04-11-2018 05:31 PM

I love it!!!!!! Perfect! Can't wait to see how you decide to quilt.

Blue Bell 04-11-2018 05:44 PM

Teen, Your quilt is a masterpiece. The blue cornerstones was the perfect choice.

Teen 04-11-2018 06:14 PM

OH...thank you so much for the lovely comments. I am so pleased with it and cannot wait to finish with the applique border.

Quilting: My LA is going to do an E2E over the blocks than I will FMQ the borders on my domestic. She doesn't do FMQ just E2E and Pantographs... I was going to quilt the whole thing myself on my domestic but it's huge and I didn't want to spend the time it would take to do it. I suck at SITD and doing 140 blocks would do my head in...lol!

Judith..... Initially, I thought about just making enough blocks for a large throw but quickly changed my mind and went for it... I see all kinds of color combinations when I imagine doing another (no way)...If I did, I would do in black, grays, and whites, with one contrasting color...maybe bright candy apple red or purple.... I'll just save that color combo for a larger sampler block/applique pattern I want to do. I'm not much of a scrappy girl, as I mentioned before. Lol!

Teen - I have spent the last several minutes just admiring your lovely quilt. You are right, the teal is perfect for the cornerstones. It is such a calming, tranquil looking quilt (a new word here - tranquilt!). It will be fun to see the whole thing come together. And BTW - beautiful quilt on your piano bench as well.

Judith - Somewhere in my Googling Sylvia quilts for ideas, I came across one done in all blues and it was gorgeous. The nice thing about this quilt is it is so versatile. Macybaby, Teen, Dottie, Anael and I have all done very different approaches to it, and you just can't go wrong, in my opinion.

Here's 2 I finished up this week. Looking forward to the weekend and getting more time at the sewing machine (that is, while working around finishing up our taxes).

Macybaby 04-12-2018 06:22 AM

Teen- that is turning out wonderful! I just ordered the "Dear Jane" EQ software, so that will be my next one. That one I'll be doing much more controlled. I think I'll do one color (all shades) with a constant background. While blues are not my prefered, I've got a whole lot of them in my very small yardage pile so that would be a good choice.

I'd prefer reds, but pulled them for the 19th mystery train. Maybe I should swap that to blues and use the reds on Dear Jane. I like working with red more so that would help.
