Thanks Judith. Yes, those are bookmarks. I will give them to the grands. The oldest one has all my bookmarks I made earlier. I told him to chose one and he took them all hahahaha. The other two don't have one so I guess it's time they have one (or more) too.

Teen 06-02-2018 07:49 AM

Anael...let me know when you get the book and start to dive in. I have started at the beginning of book but I think I'm going to skip around and do a section at a time so I can assemble faster. I am only on pattern 2 (tiny paddle block) and I need to make 16 of those. When you get your book we can synchronize...lol..

Judith....So far, the instructions are good...no problems. I have the Gypsy Wife pattern book, too, and it is not as well written as this pattern. I've heard the same as you so I've been reluctant to start it.

NZ....We got your back, girl! Patriotic FQ's are just a couple of PM's away. *wink*

Anael 06-02-2018 08:25 AM

I will, don't worry :) What's tiny? 3" finished? Most of the time I do sections too.

I wanted the Gypsy Wife, never got to purchase it though. I still love the quilt.

NZquilter 06-02-2018 10:10 AM

Wow, this so generous of you, Teen and Judith!! I just send you both a PM. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Oooh, I have always wanted to make a RWB quilt! :)

This afternoon I was browsing the internet, looking for pictures of the Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt, while thinking about the Gypsy Wife quilt. I came across a site where a few PP patterns of three blocks were offered. I thought, because I already ordered the book, I could download them and make those blocks, ahead of getting the Green Tea quilt book. I was happily sewing the first block when all of a sudden I realized those aren't Green Tea blocks........those are Gypsy wife blocks.........hahahahahaaaa. I finished the one I started and now I'm thinking: do I have to purchase the Gypsy Wife book? Or should I use this block in a quilt one day?
Oh well, here's the block, put sunglasses on as it's very bright!

Hahahahaha....my goodness...where is your patience? That is hilarious, Anael....and the block totally rocks. We are in the "bright" stuff where we both are happiest so I get your excitement. That's my excuse, too. Couple of issues with the book but not a big deal is that there are no "unfinished size" provided....just finished size.....and the templates don't have seam allowance. No biggie cuz it's easy to figure out and cut but she has reminders on each template page for the pieced blocks so you don't forget. This is Block 2 in the book and is comprised of 16 3 1/4" (finished) propeller blocks. You definitely want to sew "scant" cuz they square up beautifully when you do.

NZ!!!!!!! So excited you are doing RWB Sylvia!!!!! I'll be mailing to you next week.....woohoo!!!

I'm off and running....lol!

Anael...I just scanned from the book to excel....

Anael 06-02-2018 03:57 PM

Patience? What's that? I was born 5 days early because as my mom used to say I didn't want to wait til Christmas.

Great way to keep track of your progress!

What's scant? Almost?

Teen 06-02-2018 04:57 PM

Scant - yes...almost. Just a couple of threads less than 1/4 to account for the pressed edge. You'll end up having a sliver to cut off for perfect size. Try it like you always do and also with scant....see what works best. I pieced the entire SBS (pieced blocks) using scant and had very few blocks come up short. Made assembly so much better to have everything the same size, obviously. Anywhoo....the first block of GTSB is also in the SBS and is also unfinished 6 1/2. SBS = A1 / Mosaic No3.....in GTSB book it's called Wedding Chain Block. Each square is a diff fabric. So, see? You can make a block before the book gets there. You only need one of this block....*wink* (I shared a pic above of my block)

Anael 06-02-2018 09:17 PM

Hahahahahaaaa thank you!!

I will try that scant seam, never done it, at least not knowingly. I'll practice with the Wedding Chain Block. I'll tone down the GTSB a bit and use my flower fabrics. I still have a lot of those and I think this one is suitable for them.
Forgot to tell you I love your propeller blocks!!
I would not have recognized the WC block (oh dear hahahaha) if you wouldn't have said you made it.

Anael 06-02-2018 09:23 PM

I just ordered the Gypsy Wife book. I've been wanting to make that quilt for quite some time now and I think now is that time!

Judith1005 06-03-2018 04:58 AM

Hi Anael, I think your Gypsy blocks are beautiful. I love the green in the second one. And, once upon a time, I had a small piece of that. Very pretty blocks. According to the color saturation on my computer, they go together nicely.

Macybaby 06-03-2018 05:00 AM

If you decide to do Gypsy Wife, I've been thinking of doing another. Though with the next one, I plan on swapping out some of the blocks for ones I like better. I also have the measuers for doing all the square in a square block using triangles instead of covered corners. I just can't get them to come out right when I do covered corners, though it's suppose to be more "fool proof".

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...psbmzdchxb.jpg

I also did the "My small world" but did quite a bit of customization with that one.
Here is an "in progress" picture. it's now in line to be quilted, but I guess I never took a picture of the completed floppy.

Judith1005 06-03-2018 05:11 AM

Oh my Cathy, you sure don't pick easy patterns. Your Gypsy Wife is beautiful. And, would have love to have seen the My Small World finished. It looks exciting from the photo. The colors are what I so love to work with.

Macebaby, you can't please everyone. I guess it's a good thing your FIL didn't have to stay in the house :D

This week we had an event called Avondvierdaagse, where you walk 4 nights in a row. The weather wasn't too good so one night was cancelled and last night the distance was shortened. Here's a pic of the grands after they finished their 4th night:

Oh my...what a beautiful trio! My 50% Dutch kids are fair skinned, fair haired, and blue eyed, too. GD has such a tough time with sun...she burns so easily.

oksewglad 06-03-2018 10:01 AM

Love looking at all the new blocks and quilts...
Haven't heard of the small world quilt before...this is going on my bucket list...thanks for sharing Macybaby!

I'm jealous I can't do much sewing for a couple months and am so looking forward to this fall...One project for me to finish is Tula Pinks City block sampler made with scrap batiks....have the blocks in columns ready to sew together. Until then....I dream...

Anael....love the GW blocks...the colors look really blended....not too stark.. Does this mean you shifted to working on GW instead of GTSB? Still fun to work on new samplers together..

Macybaby....GW is gorgeous and definitely want to see the Small World when quilted. Looks so colorful.

OKsewglad.....please share your Tula pink on the wall. I love that pattern.

More work completed on GTSB... I am doing trapunto on all applique...

Anael 06-03-2018 11:27 AM

Starting with you Teen: no I don't, it's just that I was able to download a few GW blocks and figured out a few measurements. I still want to do the GTSB, both books are on their way.
Beautiful block!! I love the trapunto idea. Love the striped fabric!

OK, please share!! I would love to see your houses!
My grands do have blond hair but don't burn easily. I bet you wouldn't recognize Bram and Isa! They're 5 yo now and doing great :)

Cathy, wow!!! You already made a GW and want to make another one? I'm sure the second one will be totally different. I like yours!
Your Small World looks very interesting. Please show the finished quilt! Like Judith said, you sure don't pick easy ones!

Thank you Judith. I never think of checking the color saturation. I just combine fabrics that look good together ;)

Two more while I'm at it. H7 Odd Fellow's Chain and E4 Indiana Rose. I love applique, but I'm so used to being able to do needle turn (& just can't anymore because of arthritis in my hands), that I need to try different ways with machine stitching. I guess a sampler is a good way to practice. I did a practice quilt a couple years ago where I basically did the pillow case method - sewing the patch to thin interfacing right sides together, turning them inside out, press, pin, and using nylon thread to do like a hem stitch. It works fairly well, but thought I'd try some of the other methods. I really don't like raw edge - even with the iron on fusible. And, I'm not crazy about the zig zag edges either. It seems that somewhere in here there was a discussion on doing machine applique w/nice finished edges that the stitching barely shows - I'm thinking it was the pillowcase method, but using a tiny straight stitch w/colors that blend to the patch... Guess next applique block I'll try that. Now off to quilt a donation quilt for a friend on my Tin Lizzie.

Anael 06-03-2018 03:02 PM

Beautiful blocks auntjo! Even with zigzag :D
We have discussed the Appliquick method but that might be too hard on your hands too? Maybe as long as you can manage the pillow method that might be the way to go.

Darcyshannon 06-03-2018 09:15 PM

They are both pretty. The second one is less bright than the first but I think they go nicely together.

Here's my A1/Beans 1 :D :D Totally different from the Gypsy blocks. I need to use up some of the flower fabrics I have and not liking them very much.

Judith1005 06-04-2018 05:09 AM

Nice block Anael. It is very different from your brights. But, I do like the green center. It seems to pull the block altogether. Besides, I think once you finish and there is continuity with the floral prints, the quilt will come together. It's just very different from the brights.

Anael 06-04-2018 05:23 AM

Thanks Judith. I did it once before, florals and stepping out of my bright comfort zone and I ended up making a second quilt with bright(er) colours haha! So I see another Green Tea and Sweet Beans in my future, a very bright one LOL. This is the second block I made.

I'm now a member of the Gypsy Wife Quilt Group on Facebook. Maybe there's a GTSB group too, I will do a search :)

Anael 06-04-2018 06:31 AM

The Gypsy book has been dispatched, hopefully it will be here tomorrow!!!!! Can't wait to get it!! Mace, you're in again?

Anael 06-04-2018 08:58 AM

What about asking the admins if we could have a Jen Kingwell thread? Or we can set up a picture thread of the Kingwell blocks we made. Any thoughts?

Judith1005 06-04-2018 09:46 AM

That's probably a really good idea Anael.

Oh, fun! Some more pretty blocks to admire, and they're not that terribly different from SBS. Love all these polka dots and bright pretty colors! And a patriotic SBS coming down the pike - what an interesting thread! Your works inspires me, ladies.

Had my husband's retirement dinner last night. He was very pleased and surprised by his book, which came out great. Very busy weekend, only squeezed in 2 Sylvia blocks. Doubt I will get many done until the weekend, as my redheaded soon-to-be-6 year old gd is staying with me while the rest of her family is scattered. Dad is a Wounded Warrior in residential physical therapy, Mom & brother in Washington DC helping my other daughter & her husband move & unpack there. Our family is a little crazy these days...

Macybaby 06-04-2018 12:19 PM

Very nice!

I'm jealous of your nice blocks, I have not done any piecing since finishing my border quilt, and that didn't have much piecing to it anyway.

I've been trying real hard to catch up on quilting, and hope to keep caught up once I get there. I've got quite a bit done and now have a stack of unbound quilts!

Teen 06-04-2018 12:42 PM

Love the SBS blocks, Donna & auntjo... Donna...B9...the colors!!! Yellow!!! Love it. And auntjo, grandma fan is beautifully rich in color....love that polka dot...

Anael....yea....Your blocks are beautiful in floral. GTSB is a garden quilt so I think you are right there with the he floral fabric theme. Great way to get rid of some of floral stash that's so hard to use, at least for me.

i think a Jen Kingwell thread would be a good thing to do. She has many unique quilt patterns. Doesn't she do the Tula Pink sampler city scape etc. quilts? I think oksewglad is doing that one..... She creates really unique samplers.
i could be getting her confused with another designer.

Macybaby...if I was local to you, I would come over and help with the binding. I enjoy doing that part. You really hustled and won't be long before that stack is done and gifted. Amazing accomplishment and I'm sure all gorgeous.. We need a slide show..

My Sylvia is ready at the LA. I pick up tomorrow. She said it looks amazing. Can't wait to FMQ the applique borders and bind her up. I'll put GTSB aside when she arrives home to finish her up.... Woop woop!!

Teen 06-04-2018 12:45 PM

Donna....enjoy your GD and prayers for your wounded warrior. Please pass on my gratitude for his service and may his healing be speedy!!!

So glad the hubbies retirement party was successful and he loved your thoughtful gift.

Judith1005 06-04-2018 01:58 PM

Teen, is your bird blocks a specific quilt pattern. Or did you find the blocks at Random?

Teen 06-04-2018 03:17 PM

Judith....it's a complete quilt pattern called "Backyard Birds" by Becky Goldsmith from Piece of Cake Designs. I found in the pattern section at Joann's (It's wrapped like a flat rate envelope and not a book, if that helps). Super cute blocks..

oksewglad 06-04-2018 03:22 PM

Pretty blocks have come in.

I loved doing the City Sampler blocks...just a fun, unique variety of 6" blocks...I don't think the cuts were smaller than 1" and most of them rectangles and squares with some HST's. Mine is done in columns...it will be close to August before I can share it...No time right now..it's a good thing I get my sewing fix at work!

Teen 06-04-2018 03:23 PM

GTSB block...only 2 more to go in Section 4.....this is a fun pattern...so far...lol!

Anael....I did applique on the flowers instead of pieced, as instructed in book. So much easier instead of messing around with curves. Trapunto'd the stems in this one too

Thanks Teen, I've actually looked at that pattern a few times.

Anael 06-04-2018 03:37 PM

Oh my, I'm going to bed and you ladies start chatting :D :D :D

Beautiful blocks Donna and auntjo!

Donna, glad your hubbies party was great and he loved your very special book.

Mace, I would come over and help you bind your quilts but there's a big pond between us! You'll get there, don't worry.

Teen, how exciting, your Sylvia is coming home!! We need pictures!!
That GTSB block is gorgeous! I agree with appliqueing the flowers instead of piecing. Would be a great practice in curved piecing though.......:D

I will contact the admins about a Jen Kingwell thread. She has such interesting patterns! Not sure about the City Sampler blocks!
It will be fun to continue our journey together.
