Sylvia Bridal Sampler BOW

In January we will start a block of the week, using Jennifer Chiaverini's book Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from Elm Creek Quilts.
Our goal is 2 blocks a week, a schedule still has to be worked out if there is going to be one! This is open for discussion :)

You will need the book to be able to join. If you thought about making this quilt, please join us in the fun :) If you’ve already started, but got side-tracked, please jump in where you are and share your blocks.

There will be no patterns given and there is no sign-up required. Participants must purchase their own copy of the book. Participants are not permitted to share copies of the book's contents.

Here you can ask questions, share tips and show off your beautiful blocks or completed quilt. You can do as many as you like :)

gardnergal970 12-18-2013 05:44 AM

You will make a wonderful moderator. I have the book and did a few blocks when works on the FWS but I have no immediate plans to continue it. I wish you the best.

Anael 12-18-2013 06:13 AM

Thank you GG :) You will be here to cheer us (or me ) on I hope ! ! !
I just noticed: 136 views of this thread and you're the first one posting here

Nammie to 7 12-18-2013 06:34 AM

This sounds like a fun project!

carriem 12-18-2013 06:35 AM

Anael--I am one of the "viewers"...after you posted about it on the PC thread I came here and subscribed so I didn't miss out on the blocks. :)

ThimbleShy 12-18-2013 06:40 AM

I have the book, and was looking at it yesterday. Thought I'd start it next year, so this will be an inspirations. Thanks

Barb_513 12-18-2013 08:20 AM

I ordered the book yesterday and plan to participate, although I don't foresee being able to keep up. I will do what I can.

Anael 12-18-2013 08:24 AM

Barb, we don't have a plan yet. No stress, just do what you can. 1 block a week means you're working on this one about 2 1/2 years. The first Sylvia I made took me almost 3 years to finish.

Karen G 12-18-2013 08:51 AM

I have the book and am very interested in joining the group. Love the blocks.

Barb_513 12-18-2013 10:05 AM

Thanks Anael! I am really excited but I also know that my time is limited. I "think" I could do a block a week. I am hoping to pick fabrics this weekend. I should have the book tomorrow!

Anael 12-18-2013 11:20 AM

You're welcome :) One block a week, two or one block every other week, it's all ok. We will be here to cheer you on.

Welcome to all who want to join the fun. As said, there's no pressure, just do what you can or what you like. If some of you want a schedule, I can try and work one out. Or assign one or two blocks every week, so it will be a surprise which blocks to make each week.
Tell me what you want please.

mirabelle 12-18-2013 01:13 PM

 Hi Anael, I'm here and definitely joining you (but you already knew that):D. My first two blocks are finished, can't wait for January to get here when I will start sewing up a storm in my clean sewing room:D:D

Elisabrat 12-18-2013 03:42 PM

what size are these blocks finishing at?

Anael 12-18-2013 11:07 PM

Mirabelle, I knew that :) It's great to see you here though and I can't wait to see your first blocks!

Elisabrat, the blocks are 6" finished.

AlvaStitcher 12-19-2013 07:48 AM

I made the blocks for Sylvia's Bridal Sampler last year but have yet to completely put the top together. Life just gets in the way! LOL This quilt is great for learning new techniques. Stretched me! My advise would be to take your book to Office Depot or maybe Staples and have them put the spiral binding on it. Very inexpensive to do and such a big help. The book will then lay flat and is much easier to use.

Anael 12-19-2013 07:51 AM

AlvaStitcher, please show us the quilt when you put it together! We would love to see it.

Good idea to put a spiral binding on the book. It really makes things so much easier :)

DottyD 12-19-2013 08:36 AM

Hi Anael - I have been doing some of the blocks on the SBS BOW yahoo site - but it would be lovely to be here too ! It is nice to get other peoples help and tips ! I did write to you a little while ago - were you doing a Dear Jane BOW on QB - I think I remember your name ??
I had my book spiral bound - it helps so much. Looking forward to this journey.

Anael 12-19-2013 08:43 AM

Hi Dotty, nice to see you here! I did some on the same Yahoo site too but life got in the way. It would be great to see your blocks :)
Did I ever answer you on the DJ thread? I'm very sorry if I didn't!! Yes I'm doing a DJ too.

DottyD 12-19-2013 09:34 AM

Hi Anael,
This is a link to my SBS design wall - with which you can click on any block and it will enlarge it. Do let me know if it doesn't open !

My Dear Jane link is at the bottom of this reply ! I love these little blocks LOL.

Anael 12-19-2013 09:53 AM

A Christmas Sylvia and a Christmas Jane!! Gorgeous ! ! ! Both :)

DottyD 12-19-2013 10:19 AM

Thanks so much Anael - I had so much Christmas fabric - these little blocks are a great way to use it !

mirabelle 12-19-2013 08:44 PM

DottyD I love your virtual wall of blocks, so great to see how your quilt is growing.

thimblebug6000 12-19-2013 09:23 PM

DottyD....wow....those are both impressive! Where/how did you get your Virtual design wall, is it a program that can be purchased or something like an excel spreadsheet?

sue z q 12-20-2013 08:15 AM

I had sort of put this one aside, thinking I'd never finish, but I'm planning to follow along with you. I have a few blocks done and several in packages ready to sew. I was thinking of doing a QAYG on this quilt. If I can't keep up I'll watch everyone else. Fun, fun for the New Year.

Hi Mirabelle,
Thank you so very much for your kind comments. I discovered the design wall when I was doing my Dear Jane - but sadly Sharon Mastbrook - who put all the details of how to upload it - has for some reason - removed all the details of how to do it from the web - so I am afraid I can't help you. Lots of people tried to find out how to do it - I believe even Brenda Papadakis ( who wrote Dear Jane) could not find out why it disappeared ! I am so sorry about that.
Regards,
Dot.

Anael 12-21-2013 01:06 PM

About 2 years ago I tried to install that design wall but it didn't work. It's a pity it's removed as it's a great way to show your blocks!

Retired Quilter 12-21-2013 07:07 PM

I have been involved with Sylvia's Bridal quilt classes for three years. I have about 6 blocks to complete. I plan to make two or three quilts with the blocks. The one I am designing now will have an 18" X 18" applique in the center Sylvia blocks will be surrounding that. Enjoyed the classes and learned much about piecing. After piecing a 6 1/2" block doing the same in a larger block is a piece of cake.

sarahelloyd 12-21-2013 07:11 PM

I love the quilt, but having done the Dear Jane I don't think I could take on another one like that

Carsey 12-21-2013 07:46 PM

This sounds like fun. I will have to get the book.

thimblebug6000 12-26-2013 04:50 PM

Anael: I finally figured out how to make a grid in my EQ5 so will try to get my blocks inserted into that once we start. I am wondering if you have made a definite plan yet about how we will start... will you post which blocks to work on each week (which I think is a great idea) or will we all just work on whatever we choose..... I'm hoping for a little structure on this one to keep me in line ;)

Carsey 12-26-2013 07:25 PM

Yea, can't wait.

Anael 12-26-2013 11:50 PM

Thimblebug, that's great. I don't know EQ5 that well!

For those who want (or need) a schedule I will work out one. There are a few options:

follow the book
row by row
random blocks

Please tell me what you prefer.

Anael 12-27-2013 03:11 AM

I made a schedule for January, total of 8 blocks, starting with an easy week :)
So here it is:

week 1:
Block # E1, Nine Patch, page 53
Block # F7, Big T, page 19

week 2:
Block # A 4 Posies 'Round the Square, page 58
Block # B 10, Friendship Star, page 34

week 3:
Block # L8, Kansas Troubles, page 42
Block # I 9, Yankee Puzzle, page 77

week 4:
Block # D3, Mother's Delight, page 51
Block # F3, Bow Tie, page 20

Last week of January I will post the February blocks if that's ok with you all.

thimblebug6000 12-27-2013 09:55 AM

This looks great! Thanks so much.... will have to wait to start as have visitors for 3 more days! Looking forward to seeing everyone's blocks.

grannyQ 12-28-2013 12:50 PM

Anael, Just remembered that I might have this book, finally found it and will try to keep up with this, but I might be a bit behind schedule to start with. I really love 6'' blocks. So count me in.

Anael 12-28-2013 01:04 PM

Yeah, great GrannyQ, glad you join us! You won't be the only one falling behind, I tend to do that too :) We will cheer each other on till the end, ok?

Anael 12-28-2013 01:08 PM

According to my diary week 1 is next week! So the blocks will be due Sunday January 5th.

deltadawn 12-28-2013 02:30 PM

Good luck ladies .... enjoy ! I made my blocks for this earlier this year but can't decide how to set them .... am thinking on point with sashing. I did them in pastels . Was so impatient that I did the blocks in 3 weeks . Didn't sleep much !

Anael 12-28-2013 11:35 PM

3 weeks......meaning about 7 blocks a day (or night). WOW. Picture please!

WOW.... this is definitely encouraging to know that it could be doable!
