A photo I took today. Thought I share it with you. Reminds me of summer. The weather is still great and will be for the next few days.

Thanks all for the feedback on these blocks. I'm gonna miss working on them - or having them to work on in the background. Anael, love your pics. Discovered tonite that I can get much better pics of the quilting I'm doing on my Gd's quilt w/my phone camera than my digital camera - finally. Almost halfway there. I'm kinda jazzed w/what is happening so far !! This is a first for me.

Wowzers AuntJo, that is a show stopper!! You should be Jazzed! It looks fabulous.

AND we have a flimsy! So thrilled to have this baby sewn together, ready to add a border and start quilting. I would appreciate your input. It is plenty long enough as is for a king size bed, because of the sashing I used (3" before sewing), just needs a 12" border on the sides to make it wide enough. I am considering just putting borders on the sides and binding the top & bottom as is. Otherwise a 12" border on the top & sides will just be overkill, even hang on the floor. I have never done this type of border before - but then again, I've only made twin & queen size quilts. Your opinions?
Love your picture, Anael, and love your quilting, Auntjo. This has been such an enjoyable thread to be a part of. |
DonnaPea, it came out really great! Your cream background and beige cornerstones really frame these blocks perfectly. It's your border, you can do it any way you want. If it was me, I would do a small border at the top and bottom of about 3.5" and your larger borders on the sides. But, like you, I only make small to queen size quilts. I never make king size. I only think the 3.5" border in cream to make everything cohesive. Plus, do you tuck in the bottom? I do on my bed. So, I like a border on the bottom so more of the quilt shows. If it's a bit too big, you can just go over the pillows on the bed instead of under. These are just suggestions and my personal opinion. You do what's right for you. I wonder what others will suggest???
|
Wow DonnaPea, that looks wonderful!!!! Congrats on finishing!! A job very well done!
I did a small border in the color of the corner stones and a wider one in the color of the sashings. I would have to measure them as I don't remember the width of them. Thanks for the compliments on my picture ladies :) |
Good suggestions, ladies. As I look at it more, I'm considering this: taking 2 rows off the length (it would still be plenty long enough), adding one row each to each side. I will need to come up with 4 more blocks to even the quilt out, but could then have a more consistent border size all the way around. I think I might like that better, but I am still very open to suggestions!

Donna, Your quilt is lovely. I especially like your selection for the sashing and cornerstones.
|
Quilterscache has lots of blocks if you do need more blocks. Auntjo posted the link.
|
Thanks, Anael (and Auntjo!). I popped on there, found 4 I like, and am changing things around so it is a 12 row, 12 column quilt. I think I will like it much better that way. Will post pictures of the nice blocks when they are done. Appreciate all the good ideas!

OH. Donna......your SBS is gorgeous. I so love the beige corner stones and wide sashing...it is so subtle a color contrast that your blocks and the fabulous fabrics you used just pop off the page and it really gives the scrappy colors a soft and homey feel...Just beautiful!!! Congratulations! Looks like you are on your way for a design change with the additional blocks. I like that idea of a 12x12 layout for this quilt. Dotty did hers that way too, I think, as well as auntjo.

Auntjo....amazeballs on your quilting!!! Spectacular! You should be very proud and excited about this work...geesh...very impressive...

Donna Pea, I love your idea of moving the blocks around and making just a couple of more to finish it off. I have never made this quilt so, I didn't even think of doing that. It's a great idea. And, you know what will work best for you on your bed.
I just sent a quilt off to the quilter that I made a lot larger then I normally would, owing to the fact that the whole quilt was 1/2 square triangles. This is a test. The first 2 times I sent her quilts to quilt for me, they were also totally bias edge blocks. I had a lot of shrinkage. (They fit the guest bed better then my Queen bed. No great loss.) So, this time, I made it quite a bit bigger then normal and will test out how it comes back when it's quilted. I finished my Patriotic Quilt and have the backing ready to go to the quilter. Now to catch up on a few things that I have pushed to the side. I saved all year to have 8 quilts quilted this year. I have the money for one last one and that is it, My Seeing Stars Quilt. Now to start on saving for 8 more quilts for next year. I'm trying to finish off those UFO's. I hope I don't have more big UFO's then that. I plan on quilting all the small ones myself. (Baby and Toppers and Lap size.) Anything else, and I really like to just get them LA'md if possible. I am not a good quilter. |
Oh Donna- this looks incredible! So, so happy for you! Wish I could work on mine more. Yours has turned out just stunning. I have done 2 Kings-no more. You can put a 12" border on sides, and a 4" or 6" on the ends for the contrast and to frame. I love your sashing. Way to go!

Thanks for the kind comments. I found 2 blocks on Quilters Cache - the 1st is Crazy Amish Quilt (which I really like), the 2nd 4 Patch Variation.
I tried a few more from that site, found they were going to finish at 6", not 6.5", decided I just didn't have time to fool with changing them. Colorgirlquilts.com also had some that didn't need any adjusting and were quick & easy. After all, I thought I was done making blocks! So there we are - a 12 x 12 quilt, all sashed & ready for a border. Going shopping for that fabric this week, will post a picture when the border is on and it's ready to start quilting. |
And Judith, I'll be eager to see your finished products! Sounds like you have quite a few UFO's - what fun to see them come together.

Spent the morning pin basting this together, and now I am ready to start what I have been itching to do since February - hand quilting. It will be a while till you see the finished product. Thanks to all for your helpful comments and suggestions!

OH my DonnaPea!! Handquilting!!! That's a labour of love, it will be stunning once finished.
|
DonnaPea......this looks amazing! Truly beautiful. Your hand quilting will be the perfect touch to this piece. You just be so proud of this....you should be. Well done!!!
|
DonnaPea, Your quilt is beautiful. I really like the light background, it makes your blocks stand out. A family heirloom.
|
You are so right Blue Bell...and did you notice the little postage stamp hanging on the wall? Could you post a picture of that little beauty, DonnaPea?
|
OK, I was in awe with the quilt. Missed the postage stamp wall hanging. Hope Donna will show us the rest of the quilt.
|
I saw that, too....I was in awe of her marble fireplace in her bedroom... Lol... I snooped beyond the quilt top in picture...lol.. Is that needlework above mantle?

Don't mind friends snooping at all! Here's the secret on the fireplace - it is actually Corian, & is portable (although very heavy). We have moved it to several houses we have lived in, & I just love it. I have an electric log set in it that we light during the winter - my kind of lazy, clean fire, no logs to drag in and no little pieces of bark all over the carpet - just flip a switch. The sampler above it is cross-stitch, which is how I spent the 1980's, until it really started to mess with my eyes and I switched to quilting. And here is the wall-hanging.
|
Oh thanks for humoring us, DonnaPea! Like you I quit the xstitching because of eye strain. And I love the 9P! Are the blocks 3" square..sweet wall hanging.
|
I love the "portable" fireplace idea.. It is beautiful and most the time, I just like the ambience of a fire and not the heat one provides. I changed to a gas log a few years ago because of the soot and mess. Haven't turned it on in a couple of years. In my new home, we are installing pellet stoves...which I love. I have 3 antiques stoves in my home and love the look and feel of vintage. My new farmhouse will be perfect for them. Your quilt is stunning...thank you for sharing...

DonnaPea, I love your 9Patch wall hanging. Thank you for sharing your photo. Your quilt is going to be beautiful hand quilted. What a labor of love!
No fire place here. I live in FLorida. I doubt I would ever need to use one here. Although, I know some of the houses in our development have them. My neighbor has one. I think I've seen it in use maybe 3 times in the 16 years I've lived in this house. It just doesn't get cold enough. NZ, your blocks are so nice. I can't wait to see more of them together as you go along. I've always been a fan of Red/White/Blue. How are doing settling into your new house? Anael, that's an awesome photo. Looks like you are having a lot fun with your camera. |
DonnaPea, so sorry!! I didn't mention your 9P wall hanging. I LOVE it!! It's a simple block and a stunning result! Thanks so much for sharing!
|
Nice job, NZQuilter! I love red/white/blue fabrics, will be fun to see yours come together. Great picture, Anael. It's the small things in nature that are so exquisite, isn't it?
