I dont have a longarm, cant justify paying that much for one at my age. Sometimes I make a top I just love and I will pay to have it quilted for me. I get a lot of satisfaction just from making beautiful quilt tops, they are in a chest, someday my 3 daughters will get them and they can have them quilted.

I'm in the same boat. So I don't make anything bigger than a lap sized quilt. Mostly tablerunners, placemats, and table toppers. And I only quilt (as I call it)....stitch near the ditch. I don't enjoy the quilting part of it and really it is only meant to hold the layers together anyway. My projects are only for my family and they won't notice or care if it is imperfect.
I would just LOVE to have a long arm but will have to make do with these two short arms! ;)

I use my dsm for doing the quilting....some SITD, some cross hatching, once in awhile do something fancy...usually use a stencil for the fancy stuff. But, I do understand about seeing such gorgeous quilts that have been LAQ.

Rae, you do NOT have to quilt the tops you make. In Europe lots of the pieced/patched work they make are not quilted. Granted, fine quilting is beautiful but your batik top would be beautiful anyway. And I've noticed posts from some unhappy long arm customers--contrasted with the beautiful long arm work we see posted here--so sending your quilt out does not guarantee it will be finished as you dream it could be.

FMQ on longarm looks so good and maybe it's fun too. I would love to give it a try, but longarm quilt machine is just too expensive for me. The cost of having a quilt professionally quilted is way expensive too. I guess I need to win big on the lottery or something so I can afford a longarm. In the mean time I am trying FMQ on my sewing machine. I am starting on small projects. I need to practice ... a lot.
